I was in the market for a stirrer/hot plate when I came across a nearly new electro mantle solid state stirrer. I bought it on impulse without doing any research on it. I already hit the "accept" button so it'll be here next week. It said it,ll handle up to a 1 L flask. Does this mean it will also use smaller flasks? Most of what I do is in the small 50ml to 500ml range. How hot will it get. and is the solid state stirring equal to a standard mag. stirrer? Thank you for any advice in advance. Beastmaster. ps I paid 90.00(US) Is that a fair deal?

The model number of the mantle you bought would help
because I can't find a mantle by barnstead that stirs and
boasts support for multiple flask sizes.

Anyhow $90 is a good deal as long as it works when it get's to
you I paid $230 for mine on ebay, it retails >$600, and it
doesn't even stir.


Edit: From what I can tell most of barnsteads mantles get to 450*C

I bought it on e-Bay. It is mod.#EMA1000/CEB MK5 if that is any help. It listed for a 100.00 but I had a 10% off coupon. They said it was in nearly new condition. It was listed in a strange place, being called a beaker heater, "for them glass thing ees". I have my fingers crossed its in good working condition.

Barnstead has a lot of information about your mantle on their website and clarksonlab's catalog is also nice.

One thing to keep in mind, the CEB's are 230 volt. Might or might not be a problem for you depending on where you are. EDIT: That is a problem for you since the line voltage in the USA is 120V. http://www.kropla.com/electric2.htm

If it works and is as described you got a thousand dollar mantle for cheap.
