Buying bromine from china

draculic acid69 - 23-12-2018 at 19:16

Does anyone have experience buying bromine from China, for example how would1kg come packaged: in a big glass ampoule that once opened can't be closed or would it come packaged in some kind of bromine proof plastic bottle?

You'd have to discuss that with the supplier.

Plastic bottles are a no-no though, but a glass bottle with a PTFE lined cap can work.

How does Br2 look under xray? Will it be detected?

Bromine is invisible to infrared don't know about xrays though.I think they use gamma rays now at least for trucks and containers.why worry about it being xrayed though its liquid in a container no gun parts or pills will be hidden in the package with it which is pretty much what they look for in x raying packages.

Nobody is looking specifically for Bromine, but you better hope that supplier knows how to ship that king of quantity safely.

I will state that from my limited experience with Bromine, that I would not, order it from the other side of the planet.
It is one of the items that is easily pulled from the bromide salts. My view is to just make it. Do not give the devil the chance to show his face in transit.

shipping is the issue. you will not get it out of china. i have connections and i still cant get that sort of stuff out

Just make from NaBr or KBr

No reputable company will ship a kilo of bromine from China without a huge hazmat charge. If they ship it illegally, it might be impounded or you might find someone from a three letter agency at your door. And the kind of company that might try to do that is also the kind that might send you some unknown material and say it is bromine. Chinese companies are notorious for that type of scam,

You should be able to make any reasonable amount in a trivial manner from a bromide salt and H2SO4 or other method. I have done dozens of reactions with a 100 g bottle of bromine, and that could be made from less than 1 pound of KBr.
