i made some dnp going by 'the preparatory manual of explosives', unfortunately it seems to be contaminated by halfproduct, as its deep orange in colour

any tips on improving the process?

Is that DNP stands for dinitrophenol or dinitrophenylhydrazine?

dinitrophenol mate

Deep orange does not indicate much, since most nitroaromatics have yellow-orange hue anyway.
The product should consist of overnitrated (picric acid) and mono- nitration products so temperature control should be applied (though I do not have data on exact reaction conditions).

Is column chromatography available for you? That way you could separate out the side products away.
