EtOH in Iodine Clock ?

Hi,

I was reading the following implementation of the iodine clock reaction:

http://www.uni-regensburg.de/Fakultaeten/nat_Fak_IV/Organisc...

and noticed that they added ethanol to the reaction. What is the purpose of this addition, in the overall reaction Ethanol doesn't seem to play a role. Does anyone know the reason behind their addition of EtOH ?

Thanks
