What sex are you?

I am a fish - 21-12-2003 at 09:41

(This poll has been set up in response to the Girls! thread.)

I am a fish - 8-1-2004 at 11:30

It appears that gender parity in the field of amateur chemistry has a long way to go. :(

thunderfvck - 15-3-2004 at 12:10

Comeon!

Let's see some titties!

Shake them juggernauts!

I am a fish - 15-3-2004 at 12:48

I fail to see how softcore pornographic images are relevant to the gender distribution of the forum.

thunderfvck - 15-3-2004 at 12:59

It may attract lesbians.

tom haggen - 15-3-2004 at 13:12

Those tits are weak.

vulture - 15-3-2004 at 13:13

Okay, let's see, we're complaining about not having enough girls on the forum.....

and then we proceed to post a rather sexist picture alongside with a few irrelevant and sexist comments.....

Way to go.

axehandle - 15-3-2004 at 13:57

Porn posted in this thread would hardly work as a "more women to the forum" incentive.

Besides, I don't like blondes.

/A

BromicAcid - 15-3-2004 at 15:18

Gahhhh!!!! I always check this group out in my Comp class because we don't have any avatars and it looks quite professional. The teacher always thinks that I'm trying to find sources or whatever. So I'm on there today and what do I see, boobies, that was not very school appropriate!

Don't you dare get me in trouble again EliteForum! Or I will be sad! :(

lol, I'm not serious about being mad, it was funny as heck to see my teacher in such a fit.

And what is it Polverone just said about trying to keep things peacefull while he was away? Seriously though, such a picture does damage our credibility to some extent.

[Edited on 3/15/2004 by BromicAcid]

chemoleo - 15-3-2004 at 15:30

in that case someone (elite?:D) should post a softcore pic of some random guy... to avoid sexism.

Not that I am trying to encourage anything!

axehandle - 15-3-2004 at 15:48

I could post a picture of me, not wearing a shirt. But on retrospect, that would probably scare presumtive females away rather than attract them...

But here we go:

Ooooh! What an impressive beard I have!

Orgie! Quickly! The Valium!!!! :o

axehandle - 15-3-2004 at 15:58

ROTFLMAO

Edit: I have more.... shall we say... hardcore... pictures as well. But to spare you all the heart attack, I'll refrain from posting them...

[Edited on 2004-3-16 by axehandle]

BromicAcid - 15-3-2004 at 16:00

And after all that the origional image that started all of this is gone, poof, spirited away like the initial intentions of this topic...

axehandle - 15-3-2004 at 16:01

But don't remove my pic!!! It's not pornography, Constable, it's art!!!

Edit: Was it the beard?

Edit2: Hmmm *enter paranoia mode* is my upper naked body really THAT horrible? I've got a hippie beard and everything...

No. Not even a postcard. :)

Ramiel - 16-3-2004 at 05:57

I gather someone posted pornography... that's a pretty immature response.

Axehandle, on the other hand, looks pretty happy, did you just win solitaire or something?

Norse god of chemistry, lol.

axehandle - 16-3-2004 at 06:26

No, I was just thinking of other people's reaction to the picture. Could barely keep myself from laughing while taking the shot, hehe.

Saerynide - 16-3-2004 at 06:51

Its so strange when people post their pics cause they look so different from how you imagined them to be :P

EDIT: WOOOHOOOOO!!!! 200th POST!!! :D

EDIT II: When do you get to be a National Hazard? 250 posts?

[Edited on 16-3-2004 by Saerynide]

Yep, 250. But everybody already knows you are one :P

Looks like you are trying to crush an empty beer canisher with your arm....

Besides that you have a lot of garbage in front of you...some internet nights and related food ;););)

Isn't it a bottle of chemicals that is next to the wine bottle :D:D:D

You look pretty much like me when I decide to wear a barb and longer hairs (3 monthes) ... except I'm much more hairy than you are .... you have like a soft baby skin

Evil_Tree - 30-5-2004 at 07:33

This is a big chemistry related sausage fest...

Saerynide - 30-5-2004 at 07:42

what do you mean by that?

axehandle - 30-5-2004 at 07:59

Probably something very sexistic. It's seems very stereotypical. Luckily I'm both a feminist and a communist.

Hehe. Quite funny, though.

Edit: WTF did I drink last night? I've slept 12 hours and am still drunk....

Youre gonna destroy your liver at this rate :P

Mumbles - 30-5-2004 at 09:15

Evil Tree, at least post something semi-usefull on your first post.

It's nothing horribly sexist. It's just saying there is a huge ratio of men to women. To tell you the truth I'm suprised we even have those 5 women. That is ~11:1 from the results thus far. I would have thought more on the order of 200:1.

BromicAcid - 31-5-2004 at 05:15

Maybe the women here just felt more inclined to answer the poll then the men. Therefore the results are appropriately skewed. However if you keep an eye on the members who visit every day it looks to me like we have anywhere between 60 and 90 of them and those would be our regulars, if you don't take into account that some of the people that voted in this were only here passing by for a few days then these poll results would appear to reflect the actual composition of our regular population in that the number of people that have taken part in this equals the number of people who regularly visit.

I think....

Turel - 31-5-2004 at 14:59

....that 90+% of the posters in this thread need to relax a bit. Women are not so fragile that they cannot cope with a single post they disagree with, and likewise, do not require defense from would-be male saviors. They can handle themselves just fine.

As for the concentration of *active* posting women in this forum, I'm going to venture a claim of zero. Not one. We may have a lurker or two, or someone who registered out of curiosity, which promptly fled thereafter. I would also thus venture to state that all 5 of the currently voted female members, are male impersonators.

Just my pointless take on the matter.

Saerynide - 31-5-2004 at 17:41

All male imposters you say? :D

I know for sure at least one isnt ;)

[Edited on 1-6-2004 by Saerynide]

chemoleo - 31-5-2004 at 17:50

hehe.... and that is where your theories bite you back in the ass :D
No offense of course :)
This goes to show that the forum is a lot more genuine than most you cynics thought it to be ;)

What do girls do besides cooking steaks, laundry and other male serving tasks? Prehaps we could discuss the legitmate uses of bleach*errm no hydrazine or chloroform*.

Nerro - 9-7-2006 at 15:06

We should have some hardcore capitalists, socialists and nationalists here for good measure! We need a new poll :P

NĂ“! We do not need him around here! In any way shape or form. That fucking redneck bans everything that goes against his twisted views on things. It'd be like giving Rosco Bodine adminrights.... *shivers at the thought*

Of course me calling NBK "a filthy bigoted trailerpark redneck with ADSL" didn't help any...

indigofuzzy - 10-11-2006 at 03:34

This thread explains the harshness I recieved on the "Internet Wankers" thread.

Much chauvanism here, but I'll raise a hope that It's in jest.....

Besides, men are pretty useless. Look at the problems they cause when we let them run the government!

Eliteforum - 10-11-2006 at 12:50

Need more pictures in this thread to make it better!

Our daughter.

The mother.

The father.

Excuse the grotty surroundings, was all we could afford till I got my promotion!

I for one would love to see a picture of Vulture, MadSci, and chemoleo.

chemoleo - 10-11-2006 at 19:21

He, I actually might do this. What do we really look like? It needs some brave starter.
But it'd have to go to whimsy. A pretty daring thread :) Or maybe a special access subforum could be created, only for long time members that are beyond a doubt.

I do think it would improve the forum spirit greatly - I always hated this bloody anonymity stuff, even though I can understand why some people prefer it.
Thing is though, *if* a picture was required to identify you, it'd mean they investigate you already, and that's when you are in trouble regardless a picture (which would require the whimsy password) or not. Godamn I hate the fascist aspects of West. Why should it be illegal to play with chemistry and chemicals, this is how all the great chemists back in the good ol days discovered their passion :(

Anyway, is she a girl or a boy, your kid, it isn't really evident :)

Oh and congratulations once again!

I hope you enjoy fatherhood!

The_Davster - 10-11-2006 at 20:24

Congrats! We could have a 'guess the gender' poll!(kidding:P). I am guessing female because of all the pink.

You reminded me of the only other (MIA) member we know the appearance of....shirtless Axehandle:o...dang you lol

Be sure to let us all know how things are going!

12AX7 - 10-11-2006 at 21:16

Feeling daring, 12AX7 posts a picture. :o :D

In front of my electronics bench, of course.

Tim

Eliteforum - 11-11-2006 at 05:31

Its a girl, her name is Ellie. Loving the face hair 12AX7, I've never really grown mine, mainly 'coz it comes out firstly as black then turns an ungodly orange/ginger colour! (I've brown hair and eyes however!)

Come on chemoleo, man-up and be one with the camera.

Nerro - 11-11-2006 at 05:58

The baby looks really really adorable! Congratulations :)

Good luck being a father, I've heard a lot of people complain that being a nobelprizewinner is one thing but being the parent you want to be is quite another ;)

12AX7 - 11-11-2006 at 07:42

Heh yeah, my hair is brown but for some reason a lot of my chin whiskers are kind of orange, go figure!

_1v4_ - 15-11-2006 at 05:57

Uhm.. ppl... there's really a lot of offtopic here.

I am female and I think that there's nothing wrong with girls and women being scientists, in this case chemists. Look at Marie Curie, chemist and physicst, a double Nobel Prize winner, the first woman ever teaching on Sorbona... I mean, when sb says "scientist" unfortunately a lot of people first associate that word with a male scientist.. too bad :(... but there is some truth in that.. look: 126 male votes and only 10 female!! Why...?

12AX7 - 15-11-2006 at 11:02

Don't know. Cultural bias? Nature? (Women do tend to have more interconnected brains, leading to more emotional rather than the rational thought processes which men use.)

Oddly enough, out of 12 students in my Quantum Mechanics class, three are girls.

Tim

Chris The Great - 15-11-2006 at 16:13

I noticed a lot of girls studying chemistry at the university. I mean, the majority! Perhaps they are less drawn to DIY chemistry? I'm not sure at all.

You like like a 1900's era scientist there :D

PS: I admire your well organized table. Far better than mine.

Rosco Bodine - 16-11-2006 at 19:26

With the lady chemists ........

a good first line is

" Hey little girl you want some candy ? "

From there you can move right along to

wild mountain honey :D

12AX7 - 17-11-2006 at 13:48

Mind that chemistry is something of the "science credit for the humanities wusses" class. At least, the lowest levels -- uh, I suppose you'd be speaking of higher level classes though?

Something like 60% of college these days is female... probably speaks to the feminine rights movement junk and wage disparity.

Tim

The_Davster - 17-11-2006 at 15:20

Its about 50/50 up here in my more advanced chem courses. And the grad student ratio is around that as well, but perhaps a little slanted to the male side.

I have talked to many people about home chemistry, I have gotten 3 males interested, and one female. Unfortunatly 2 of the guys live in residence so one of them is waiting till he is out to start wheras the other just goes out on the front steps and does stuff. The other guy and the girl are in the starting a lab stages. They have all been linked here, some may have joined, not sure.
People in the chemistry field here is pretty mellow about home experimentation, only one is really against it, many are 'as long as you are safe' or just indifferent and a couple are 'Holy, you remind me of the good old days'.

Descriptive astrophysics or something like that is the course for the wussy artsies here. No calculations or lab.

kclo4 - 11-5-2009 at 20:04

I'm not a communist, I enjoy freedom, and not sharing the money I have worked for, and deserve. I also want more freedom, and less tax. I think people should take care of themselves.

It is interesting to note that not nearly as many females are interested in science as men are. I think it has a lot to do with whatever causes men to be left handed more often, and have asperger syndrome and autism more often as well. I guess testosterone may play a big roll. I know it does with left-handedness anyways, and people with on the autism spectrum are more commonly left handed then a random sample.

zed - 11-9-2009 at 23:21

"Well, at least there are some girls here. Either that, or guys pretending to be girls."

Not to mention, that there some extra-terrestrials here, who are pretending to be humans.

You can only imagine how puzzled I am, er.....I mean THEY are, by this whole discussion.

AirCowPeaCock - 10-1-2012 at 14:43

Girls have a slightly more social tendency.. maybe we just don't have the time to displace the social scene for DIY chem... but to me, chem comes first and foremost!

Mr. Wizard - 10-1-2012 at 22:01

Maybe the ladies' outlooks are guided by thousands of generations of evolution that favors them paying attention to myriad things that will usher the next generation into life. They may not put as much emphasis on it now, but their hard wired characteristics will manifest themselves. Men on the other hand can get by sometimes with only a few minutes of invested time, and can be off to other matters, like sharpening sticks, or knapping flints.

We are a product of our past.

Hexavalent - 12-1-2012 at 13:20

We should find another DIY science forum, perhaps pertaining to physics or biology or earth science, and see what the results are there.
