H2SO3 + NaHCO3 --> ?

maybe NaHSO4, CO2, H2O, H2, NaSO3...

I've tried lots of stuff and I can't really see what would happen. Maybe I'm just at a block...

=> NaHSO3 + CO2 + H2O
or
=> Na2SO3 + 2 CO2 + 2 H2O

NaHSO3 is made by blowing SO2 and steam through a mush of Na2CO3, the steam helping carry off the cO2 formed, while Na2SO3 is made by taking the NaHSO3 mix and adding the calculated amount of Na2CO3 to it and blowing steam through it.

oh, I see.

SO2 + H2O(steam) --> H2SO3

but you realize we're dealing with NaHCO3, not Na2CO3, right?

Same diff

Na2CO3 (aq) + SO2 + H2O <=> NaHCO3 + NaHSO3

You do realise that H2SO3 (aq) does not appear to exist, an aqueous solution of SO2 shows the presence of SO2 and HSO3- but not H2SO3.

Yes. I know. Just easier to write it that way.
