These guys are experts in high power pneumatics and
made this flame thrower for burning man which launches
about 3 gallons of gasoline straight up.

I like it, but it seems that you can much more easily do this using a fat bag of gasoline ontop of some black powder in a coffee can. However, I do not know if a gasoline/blackpowder fireball will cause the flame to rise as vertically as it did in the clip you posted.

Could a long tube be used to direct the flame, still using a blackpowder propellant? Or is it impossible without some sort of nozzle system...

Interesting.

Experimentation with the choice of fuel particularly the highly volatile varieties
would prove interesting. Required is something having a very low flash point
Ethylene oxide or perhaps Ether. Immediately as the plume disperses and is
volatilized it can be ignited by a tracer round fired through it , producing a
directional Fuel Air Explosion. I had thought of something similar able to
eject a conical plume of liquid explosive that initiated at the apex would
produce a convergent directional blast wave much as a shaped charge.
