The first product formed will be acetone. However because acetone is a methyl ketone, the acidic hydrogens on the carbon alpha to the carbonyl will
be one by one replaced by chlorine. Then the the the trichloromethyl group will be cleaved giving chloroform and the ketone will be oxidized to the
carboxylate forming calcium acetate.
Look up the haloform reaction. |
