Sorry if this is a cross-post

NaHSO4 seems to break down into NaO + H + SO2+ as my neighbors could testify if they had been awake at the time,.

Just a warning: NaHSO4 seems to have SO2-2 as a byproduct in case any of you tries my method. It took 2 hours of windows open to get rid of the stench and the cough.

I think it's the elevated temp (ca 1200C) that's the culprit here.

Be careful, folks.

It dehydrates (loss of water) to sodium pyrosulphate,

2 NaHSO4 -> Na2S2O7 + H2O,

This on furthur heating produces SO3.

Na2S2O7 -> Na2SO4 + SO3,

Some SO2 will probably be formed as well, and some sulphuric acid vapour from the water being released.

This is one method oleum can be made at home. Though the temps are a little high for catching the gasses easily. >500C I think, unsure exact values.

SO3 decomposes on heating to give O2 and SO2
