Why is tin(II) chloride used as indicator for precious metals?

SnCl2 is used to test for precious metals in solution during refining. Why SnCl2? Why not other cheaper/more easily obtained reducing agents like sulphites/oxalic acid?

It reduces pretty much all the precious metals rapidly and has a tendency to form colloidal particles which can be used to identify the metal based on color.
