NM NA small charge

twelti - 19-6-2019 at 10:28

I'm interested in trying a small amount of NM sensitized using NA. I'm wondering what is the smallest amount that would work? for example, would 1 oz of 70/30 NM NA be detonatable using an ETN cap? Minimal confinement. Second question, if this did work, would it be safe to do it in a bucket o' sand? I have a bucket within a bucket, with mixed sand and sawdust. So far works brilliantly for testing caps of up to 1 g or so of ETN/PETN. I would like to test the NMNA in there. I have a larger plastic bin (several times the volume of the bucket) I could try as well.

NM can be sensitized with 5% Ammoia. NA should must be near to 100% to sensitize NM

Hmmm, according to Axt:
For a bang, try using 30% of 70% HNO3, never fails.

Ammonia would be convenient too though. Still wondering about the minimum amount.

You could try both and see for yourself. 5% dissolved ammonia and 95% NM by weigh should be quite sensitive. NM will change color as long as a salt of ammonia and NM will form.

I'm almost positive that you will destroy your bucket if you detonate 30g of any HE inside. I suggest you dig a hole in the ground instead.

Sounds right. Still wondering how small I could go with that though, I assume that a few grams is not gonna detonate (?)
