What would be the easiest way to acquire:

I know local gas suppliers have it, but I just figure they would look at you like your a madman. I guess ordering it through a company whom I work for would be the best bet. Any experiences with this? Thanks

There are more readily available ways of a making phosgene but none cheaper. You will likely get some three letter agencies after you if you try to order 'large' quantities of chlorine and carbon monoxide together.

Making cobalt chloride via the really hard route. Gotta admire thereelstory's level of ambitiousness, even if the level of practicality is questionable.

I do hope that is their goal, as someone who can't properly write the symbols for carbon monoxide likely shouldn't messing with CO, Cl2, or COCl2...

If you want to synthesize toxic chemicals: pick something interesting, challenging, and that isn't in the gas phase. How about strychnine?

Depending on whether you want to use carbon
monoxide (CO) or Cobalt (Co) there are better
ways to do these processes.

God knows why you would want a 1 cubic meter
tank (30cf). IF, highly NOT recommended, you
would want to make phosgene (COCl2) there
are much more efficient ways, but I would just
prefer to buy triphosgene instead. Unless you
specifically want isocyanates in a flow-through
process. With triphosgene you would need 3
times less for any reactions. It's slower reacting
and a solid.

And you wouldn't wipe out your neighborhood if
there was an accident.

But it would be doubtful that you would actually
get that far...

As for CoCl2, again easier to buy it.

Assuming you have the correct authorization
and permits.

Leave the big boy toys to the big boys.

There are plenty of syntheses of strychnine published. It is something of an Old Man Of Hoy amongst organic chemists, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_man_of_hoy , ever since RB Woodward's conquest of this small but technically challenging peak in total organic synthesis others have been tempted to try their arm.

If the OP is confusing cobalt metal and carbon monoxide gas, he probably shouldn't be making phosgene gas or cobalt chloride. He should go back to school and learn the difference. Also good luck on finding monoatomic chlorine. Do you want a blacklight with that 30cf chlorine gas tank?

Besides, what on Earth do you need phosgene for?! Do you have a grudge against your neighbours? Try making something more useful and less dangerous than phosgene. If you really want to make a poisonous gas, take some HCl or H2SO4 and mix it with a metal sulphide. This gas will knock the oxygen out of your cells and will kill you in a matter of minutes.

Only a beginner would be ambitious enough to make phosgene, especially a dozen cubic feet of it. Get a grip.

"Phosgenations - A Handbook" by Livius Cotarca and Heiner Eckert.

Apparently, phosgene opens doors for a huge variety of chemical reactions at a reasonable cost once procedures for safely handling it are in place. Still, I chuckled at the introduction to the book, titled "contradictions." In the third paragraph, the authors basically say, "Yeah, it's toxic; but look what else has similar toxicity that we don't mind working with!" Never a winning argument.

I still don't understand though, you can make CO easily by taking some organic matter and pyrolizing it. You can make chlorine gas by mixing some muriatic acid with some bleach. You don't need to order these gasses on ebay, you can just make them yourself in small and (semi)manageable quantities.

ive got a youtube video of refining cobalt from a battery, its a slow method to get it but if you do a large scale, u may got alot of it

Chloroform can be oxidized into phosgene by air upon UV light irradiation not? It is also easily liquefied (8.3 ÂșC), so maybe it can be done at lab.

Not that I will ever try it, or maybe it is a good experiment to attempt when you feeling depressed, alone and deluded with life.
