Making Concentrated Nitric Acid Video

thors.lab - 25-7-2019 at 01:27

Hi, I've made another video. This time, I made concentrated nitric acid by just protonating potassium nitrate with sulfuric acid and distilling.

The link is in my signature.

I tried to incorporate some of your guys' feedback from my last video on Making Benzene. Unfortunately, I'm still struggling with getting a relaxed and clear speaking voice going on.

If you have any other suggestions on improving my videos, I would love to hear them!

I plan on making nitrobenzene next, however I'm not sure what I want to do after that. Are there any neat projects involving nitrobenzene besides aniline?

I'm not going to post a summary of the procedure this time, since it's pretty basic (202g KNO3, 120mL H2SO4, 100mL H2O were simply distilled, then redistilled, collecting anything over 117ºC). But I still thought it would make an interesting video and be good practice.

Thank you!

NB, I must tell you, is highly toxic and carcinogenic by ingestion, skin absorption and inhalation of its vapour...

How about nitrobenzene -> Phenylhydroxylamine -> 4-Aminophenol -> paracetamol?

Seems doable up till the last step. I don't think I can get access to acetic anhydride, and making it with ketene is a bit too dangerous for me… and I don't think I have a way of making acetyl chloride :/
