Grant Thompson has died in a Paragliding Accident

Loptr - 30-7-2019 at 14:58

Such troubling news. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Not exactly how I imagined him leaving this world.

Shocked.

Paragliding has a bit of a reputation for taking out guys before their time. It seems like a gentle thrill but it can bite hard.
Sorry to hear of this.

Vomaturge - 30-7-2019 at 17:36

Sorry to hear that. I know he got a lot of hate here. IMO it mostly boiled down to the fact that some of his experiments were about demonstrating or discovering what would happen in certain specific conditions, and not always about the scientific principles of why it happened. That being said, he never really claimed to be "the King of Science."

I enjoyed many of his videos, and made several projects ar least partially based on them.

I wish the best for his family as they have to live through this tragedy.

Press F to pay respects to a legend.

I also watched NurdRage's response. The two were close. I never thought I would hear him cry

King of random has died

Moved to L&S since not everyone has access to Whimsy, and it makes sense to have all condolences in one spot.

A member with >1200 posts doesn't have whimsy access?! Seriously?!:o

I was never a fan of grant personally, in fact I really disliked his videos for the most part. But he inspired people to do things and that is honorable and I'm sad he's gone.

i subscribed to him when he posted maybe his forth or fifth video on youtube, i really liked his projects, i unsubscribed last year because his new videos were the usual boring random stuff most youtube channels do now, but i liked his personality and his attachment to his family, he was a great dad in my opinion. i'm sad he's gone, he just realized his dream/mission of making his channel run without him so he could enjoy his life with his family, he enjoyed it for too little time.

RIP Grant Thompson, King of Random

Just saw on Apple News today that he was killed in a paragliding accident. They are still trying to determine what happened. He was a great mad scientist! Deepest condolences to his wife and four children.

I agree and feel much the same.

"The fatal crash was filmed on a camera mounted on Thompson’s paramotor
The King of Random creator’s body was found on Tuesday using GPS data near the Sand Hollow State Park in Utah."

"Authorities now believe a change in the updraft caused the parachute to malfunction, leading to the 38-year-old’s sudden death, TMZ reported."

The other day I watched this dangerous island airport with windshear where they may not even be able to use it for large planes and might blast the tops off two peaks to try to fix it, and wondered if Grant had met with something like that. It discusses it around the 20 minute mark.

he was a very honorable guy, his real name was Timothy Burgess howevever.
aesthetically blessed and intelligent. drive. character. he could explain complex things simply, i rarely had any corrections to make to his seemingly civil explanations
whether you ever talked to him or not you gotta adore him for his passion and drive, and even more so his support for small and big youtubers
glory is beyond the grave

MrHomeScientist - 28-8-2019 at 08:17

They were friends, not the same person. Burgess was involved in that incident where they were lighting that unknown powder on fire and the local police were called.
