Synthesis of N-methylimidazole

Triflic Acid - 15-3-2021 at 16:11

I have imidazole, and am going to make N-methylimidazole by reacting it with MeI and then NaOH. What solvent should I use for this reaction?

DCM should work well.

Just out of curiosity, did you find that in a prep? If so, could you give a link or something?

I would try water or methyl alcohol first.

No, just my intuition.

I don’t think water would be great considering it will react with the methyl iodide and it’s annoying to evaporate. Methanol sounds good though.
