Pyrophyllite prep?

elementcollector1 - 30-8-2021 at 20:15

Looking to prepare specifically pyrophyllite (Al2Si4O10(OH)2), an aluminum silicate hydroxide, while avoiding analogues like kyanite (Al2SiO5, (Al2O3·SiO2)), kaolinite (Al2Si2O5(OH)4, (Al2O3·2SiO2·2H2O)), mullite (Al6Si2O13, (3Al2O3·2SiO2)). Not finding much in the literature, unfortunately...

If this works, I'd be reviving a procedure from 1957-ish to grow macroscale tourmaline crystals. Might write a paper on it? Not sure.

Its a mineral and its not going to be easy to synth in the lab but there is plenty of data on its stability field so you should be able from this to workout suitable conditions. Its essentially a low pressure hydrothermal alteration product of most any aluminous material. Its actually fairly common in some countries.
