Interesting Alcatel diaphragm pump

Hi,
I acquired a pump that seems to go by many different names.
It has a sticker with "Thermo Electron Corporation, Pump type: ARL MP1-V3, a nameplate with Alcatel's logo and the name "Diaphragm pump AMD1" and this site claims it has something to do with Pfeiffer: https://www.ajvs.com/new/product_info.php?products_id=22737
So a pump claimed by 3 different manufacturers! Business is complicated for an oridinary chemist :)

Anyways, my question is whether someone knows the purpose of the silicon cover on the exhaust port? Is it a silencer? That confuses me because the pump has another, copper frit pneumatic silencer on it. The pump makes a weird noise when the silicon cover is moved and even though it has a flat screwhead it's impossible to unscrew it. I was only able to find a small manufacturer's pamphlet of the pump. Here is the video of the pump working and the silicon cover: https://streamable.com/gpqg26

I think the previous owner used it as 2 separate vacuum pumps, or stripped the piping, if you check the first link (or the picture on your pump) you have posted the two sides must be connected in series.
