Wharever happened to... all of the images!

blogfast25 - 7-12-2022 at 13:03

Those who know me here know I took a long hiatus from this forum. Things are bound to have changed somewhat.

Looking at some of my own old posts: some seem to have lost some images, in particular photos?

What gives? Bandwidth savings? :o

The great spam wars, and such I seem to recall possible crash some where along the line.

Hope you're doing well friend.

Good to see you back, and yeah there are a lot of images gone. This board is kinda quaint, to say the least ;)

j_sum1 - 7-12-2022 at 17:57

Did you say quaint or quiet?

On the images – a few possibilities.
  • Image rot – links to external sources expire. AFAIU, some time shortly after I joined a change was made to host images on the board. Which meant that from that point when you linked an image it was automatically uploaded. Not sure that it always worked though. I know that I started my journey here using imgur but then switched to uploading to the board directly.
  • Syntax problems – I know some old links expired because of this. Also, threads that were imported to a new subforum (Responsible practices) did not reliably have all the syntax come over. Ditto for threads sent to Detritus. These are recoverable. It just takes someone with editing privileges and a bit of time. I have done this on request for a few threads.
  • Something else...

If you link to some problem threads then I can take a look.

Thanks all for your kind words.

That won't be necessary but thanks for offering.

But can we still adorn our posts with photos? If 'yes' then how?

The most reliable way is to upload photos as attachments, like this:

    2DE247FA-102F-4CDD-AAC2-B7B8C18531C2.jpeg - 1MB

I eagerly await your future adventures, you've been missed here!

Gosh, I remember when I first started I had to login to the FTP to upload my images. I'm assuming those are long gone...

Thanks! A few weeks now: some interesting stuff to clear out part of my bucket list...

Moderators, Can I ask a big favor? I have many photos that are about 4800 x 2400 in size, but I cannot upload them, they are mostly 1-2 Meg each, so not too big, just wider than allowed now. Can we change the photo upload size to allow wider photos up to maybe 5000 pixels?

Micro soft paint works rather well for cropping and resizing!

    Here's a tool I learned only recently.

Download powertoys from microsoft. (I used a github link which I don't have with me atm.) One tool allows you to select as many images as you want in explorer, right click, and creaye resized copies all at once. The package has many other useful tools.

    Here is a good overview.

I should add that image maximum is currently set to 4k. I know that many cameras nowdays take much larger resolution. But I don't think there is much benefit in this board hosting larger images than we already do.

Of course that is just my view. Other mods might think differently.

4k is really rather paltry for modern cameras/smart phones.

So what do we do if an already cropped image exceeds 4k? I can feel frustration and/or a headache coming on. :(

I see no reason why we couldn't raise the image size limit, and it's a simple enough change in the forum settings. I'm pretty sure it has been done at least once in the past. I wouldn't do it without Polverone's input and approval though, in case there are non-obvious ramifications of raising the limit.

    Edit: I sent Polverone a U2U.

When you have contact with Polverone, why not ask him to update the forum software to XMB 1.9.12? Would be nice to be able to open subscriptions and fix a bunch of security issues not?

The update was only released two years ago
