I've been looking at HAN (hydroxylammonium nitrate) synthesis.
I'm wondering about using hydroxylamine salts ie hydrochloride or sulphate.
Any advice on starting materials?
I've found a paper that details nitration of "aqueous amine hydroxides" with nitric acid.... but my basic organic chemistry is pretty remote (was a
physical chemist in my previous life)
Thanks guys,

What did you find? Nitrous2000 - 18-1-2023 at 13:47
I can send you the translation from Korean to English
otherwise, here's the link to the paper - google translate seems to do an adequate job resulting in a readable paper.
I'm guessing it's referring to the aqueous amines as ammonium hydroxides?Nitrous2000 - 18-1-2023 at 17:05
I wondered about that... but I don't think ti could be as simple as "take ammonium hydroxide and add nitric acid' But I don't remember the term "amine
hydroxide"
The goal is hydroxylammonium nitrate, so beginning with hydroxylamine solutions is key.
Some have referred to the sulfate or hydrochloride, but acknowledge that purification is a problem.
I guess my question is "what's the simplest "amine hydroxide?" is it ammonium hydroxide?clearly_not_atara - 18-1-2023 at 17:44
"Is ammonia an amine?"
Kind of a philosophical question, but I'm going with no, because we don't usually refer to water as an alcohol. So the simplest example would be
methylammonium nitrate. But how would that help?Nitrous2000 - 18-1-2023 at 18:11
Ammonium hydroxide
I guess I'm struggling with the term "amine hydroxide"
the end result is hydroxylammonium nitrate
I guess the simplest route might be barium nitrate and hydroxylamine sulfate.clearly_not_atara - 19-1-2023 at 17:25
If your translation mentions "amine hydroxides", it's wrong. The paper I see clearly states
Quote:
In this study, relatively a safe propellant, hydroxylammonium nitrate[NH3OHNO3], was prepared via a neutralization reaction of hydroxylamine[NH2OH]
and nitric acid[HNO3].
which doesn't leave much to the imagination. There are no "amine hydroxides" here.Nitrous2000 - 19-1-2023 at 18:49
agreed. But the barium nitrate approach is old, but tried and true.
The "amine hydroxide" is from the paper I cited.
