Blue glowstick
I want to extract blue glowstick's 9,10-diphenylanthracene and phthalate ester, total used 30 more stick glowstick. I use NaOH to dissolve phthalate, use organic solvent separate organic matter, forget detail, filter away insoluble matter, use ethyl acetate dissolve remain DPA, now organic solution is orange.
Red glowstick
Steps also similar, total 50 more stick glowstick, now organic solution is red.
Phthalate
pour two cups of sodium phthalate together, solution is light yellow, then add activated carbon, water solution become deeper orange yellow brown.
Question
1. Why use organic solvent (I only used isopropanol, methanol or ethyl acetate) will have insoluble matter? those inorganic matter dont dissolve in water or organic solvent, where they come?
2. use ethyl acetate dissolve red glowstick better than isopropanol, little red matter in isopropanol very light red, later add ethyl acetate solution become deeper, why?
3. why add activated carbon sodium phthalate water solution become deeper colour not lighter? isnt activated carbon absorb organic compound? is these activated carbon fake?
