Solvent substitute

Random - 5-4-2011 at 00:46

I was looking for some extractions, but most of them need some solvent that is insoluble in water like diethyl ether and DCM. I can't make or obtain them.

Are there some substitutes for that, maybe toulene, xylene would work or some other easier to get solvents?

Diethyl ether and DCM have the advantage of being very low boiling, quite polar and forming good discrete layers.

I suppose chloroform is out of the question?
