Alternative friedel craft solvents

Obviously benzene and toluene are often used as both a solvent and substrate. Nitrobenzene is close to ideal but not readily available for the amateur although not difficult to make. DCM and chloroform are options but create added impurities as they do react. Bmim cl is a good green solvent but outrageously priced as are most ionic liquids suitable for FC reactions. Nitromethane is a posibility as it is available as model engine fuel. I was looking at 2-nitropropane which has a pathway described in patent CN106045859A that doesn't involve a high pressure reaction at 400C. I have also looked at nitrotoluene as ortho, para and mixed. These have the advantage that toluene is easy to get. I am looking for other possibilities preferably from someone with experience. Criteria are: inexpensive and obtainable by amateurs. I am leaning toward p-nitrotoluene because it is similar to nitrobenzene and I have no experience with the nitropropane synthesis or the reaction in it as a solvent but would expect it to react similar to nitromethane with potentially less contaminants. Practical experience is appreciated.

Isnt HEAA and HEAF good ionic liquids for this?
Cant be expensive either as its made from monoetalolamine and acetic acid.

Adding those to the lists of possibilities. They may not work with my reactions but good reference for the future. I like the fact they act as a catalyst so no AlCl3 needed.
