Ampules and glass tube sealing

Polesch - 9-7-2011 at 17:00

I have some chemicals that I would like to seal in a nice glass tube, but I've never done any glass melting before. I'm basically asking .. How would I go about doing that? Should I order some closed ended test tubes, and melt the ends together? Could I buy ampules that are more easy to seal? Any easy tricks to remove any oxygen in the tube before sealing?

I have a few grams of this 'beautiful' NaK, a sodium-potassium alloy. Liquid at room temperature. I have it stored in mineral oil at the moment, but I'm a bit afraid to seal the ampule with mineral oil in it (flammable), and it doesn't like air too much either (forming potassium superoxide).

Thank you all.

There is at least one good thread on ampoule making on this forum. Use the search function to find it (them).
