Reading a book

Darkfire - 24-3-2004 at 21:12

Im reading Brave New World and in it is this chemical formula, Ch8C6H2(NO2)8 plus then the formula for hg fulminate then that eqauls a big hole in the ground... But wtf does Ch mean?

Haggis - 25-3-2004 at 11:55

I've never personally come across something like that with the usage of "Ch". However, one thing is jumping out at me, which is octanitrocubane. This however, doesn't fit.

Perhaps it is a fictional explosive made up specifically for the book. That, or a research or typographical error by Huxley.

The book is very old and we have progressed many fold in science since it was published, so i think its due to time not error.

The book isn't *that* old. I think it's an error.

It's TNT. What you have read as 8's are 3's.

Brave New World was written in 1932. All the basics of today's technology were in place then. It seems to be a very prophetic book. Look at the latest essay at this site, which seems to be very timely for this thread:

Prophetic? How?

axehandle - 26-3-2004 at 12:17

It's not "prophetic", it's a work of fiction. A good one at that, but not "prophetic".

/A

Prophetic about the state's intrusions into reproductive matters, good and bad. You are right, it hasn't come to that yet.

Darkfire - 27-3-2004 at 09:47

It will - remeber this book is set 6 centurys in the future. This kinda shit is starting to happen now...

Nick F - 27-3-2004 at 13:13

Oh, don't be ridiculous. What "kinda shit" is starting to happen now?

Darkfire - 27-3-2004 at 13:34

Well i dont means exactly like that, but its far from ridiculas, its what happens when popluations rise. Organization is rerquired...
