Search YouTube for videos on it, I'm sure I've seen a few. What type of equipment have you got access to? If you have a Soxhlet Extractor I'd recommend using that, they're really useful as the solvent is recycled and it can be left to run for hours without any supervision (although you should check on it periodically). Again, YouTube has good videos describing how it works. Hope that was of some help to you =)

If you don't have a soxhlet extractor you can make one check out this link

Nice link Steve, it's giving me ideas... Thanks =)

How is a Soxhlet Extractor going to help with the purification of eugenol from the other contaminates in the oil?

I suggest adding (aq)base such as NaOH or KOH to bring the eugenol into a water solution which is then washed with a non polar solvent and released using an acid. The materials that come though must have formed something similar to the phenolate salt and I would venture to guess you end with reasonably pure Eugenol from this simple process.

It's just the first step, extracting the raw essential oil from the cloves. Depending on what equipment he has he could then do a vacuum distillation and have a much purer product and not have to mess around with A/B extraction...

The original poster is asking about already made oil not making the oil herself.

Do your self a favor and get a distillation kit because if you want to play with essential oils you'll need one to seperate the oils into thier components. You'll be amazed that a oil from one plant when seperated will have a few very different smells.

angelina99,

The extraction of eugenol from clove oil is trivial. I recommend searching the forum and published literature before posting.
A quick google search, and the third result gives an explicit procedure in PDF format, which just happens to be hosted on ScienceMadness.org.

Oh whoops, o should've read the first post more clearly. I just saw 'extract' and 'clove oil' and must've just invented the rest myself =P sorry about that!
