Separation of Potassium Hydroxide from zinc powder

symboom - 25-9-2011 at 14:57

before i try it does any one know what will separate the compounds

an alkaline battery contains potassium hydroxide manganese dioxide
and zinc powder in the potassium hydroxide the manganese dioxide is separated from the potassium hydroxide paste with paper if carefully extracted with a pipe cutter with a new battery they stay in the compartments.

spent alkaline battery contains zinc oxide
not spent has zinc powder still in it

potassium hydroxide combines with zinc or zinc oxide in solution forming
potassium zincate

could these be used without the the potassium hydroxide reacting with the solvent and filtering out the zinc or zinc oxide

acetone
Isopropyl alcohol (salted out water)
denatured ethyl alcohol

i know you can just buy it but all i need is a small amount.

For KOH just dissolve it in water. Zincates do not form readily when there is only a dilute solution of potassium hydroxide. Just place all of the battery components in a moderately large amount of water, agitate, filter, and then you have a KOH solution. Boil it down for a more concentrated solution. I did that once, but kept it in air so it became completely K2CO3.
