Hi there,
I'm tryin' to take my a** off the inorganic chemistry, and try some organics

I've got some camphor, and is there any interesting reactions with it, except eating or burning it off ? ;)
Although its not worth eating !!

Common student experiment is to reduce camphor to isoborneol. Oxidation with dilute nitric acid gives camphoric acid and so fort. Look at the thread http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=13675.

You could sulfonate it with sulfuric acid in the presence of acetic anhydride. Orgsyn has a prep for it. If you have natural (not synthetic) camphor, the optically pure acid can be used for chiral resolution - pretty neat, eh?
