Gas Generation

SulfurApothecary - 28-6-2012 at 21:01

I just made an apparatus for gas generation, I posted it on youtube.

Do you guys know any gas generation apparatus? If so I would like to make this thread a place where you can post them... I checked and I could not find a gas generation thread already, so if there is one please let me know and move this to the junk bin.

not a good idea in your room :o
but an easier idea is to use a 1 neck flask, on top of that a vacuum takeoff adapter, and a sep funnel with HCl above that. then have a plastic tube going from the vacuum takeoff to your other flask with sulfur
also, you could use pool chlorine instead of KMnO4 as it is cheaper.
you could buy glass tubing on united nuclear

The classical gas generator is known as Kipp's Apparatus, on YouTube Adrian's Lab has a video of one in operation. I'd love to have one!

out of curiosity what size( volume) flask & funnels are you using in this set-up? looks to be either 14/20 or 19/22 but i could be wrong.

SulfurApothecary - 29-6-2012 at 13:51

It is in 19/22

Im not doing it in my room, dont worry, I just made the setup there.

Yes ive seen the kipps and might get one.

I love kipps gas generator, if I get one the first thing I will do is make H2S!

And thanks for the tip pyro... I might do that...

Be extremely careful with H2S - I'm sure you already know this, but it is more toxic than HCN (hydrogen cyanide) and after a while it deadens the sense of smell, meaning you could be exposed to a lethal concentration of it without even knowing it.

SulfurApothecary - 29-6-2012 at 14:21

Oh yes I know all about the toxicity, I do have a gas mask certified for it and will have things on hand to make it not so deadly...

Only problem with Kipps Apparati ( aside from the sheer scarcity) can be how they are designed. The better ones I have seem have a glass tube from the base into the middle chamber in addition to the top reservoir's long tube. It helps with loading the middle chamber. The last time I saw one of Those was several years ago but if you have the cash there may be a glassblower somewhere in NJ who could do it.

over here you can buy em new for 200 dollars, its too expensive for me ;)

SulfurApothecary - 29-6-2012 at 16:57

Me too.

By the way I posted a video of the synthesis:
