Phenylacetone synthesis?

Reverend Necroticus Rex - 24-6-2004 at 17:38

I am a bit iffy about posting this here, given one of the uses of phenylacetone,
I actually want to try using it to make phenol though, if the mods think it's not ok to post this, then please delete it.

How about making calcium phenylacetate from phenylacetic acid then heat decomposition to phenylacetone (I'm not too sure if this will work), or would this either A: not work at all, or B: decompose to both
acetone+calcium phenolate?

Again, sorry if I overstepped the boundaries on this one.

http://www.rhodium.ws/chemistry/phenylacetone.html

This should cover most of them.

Damn, sorry again about the double post, but my personal preference would have been the hydrolysis of benzal chloride, which is formed by chlorinating toluene.

I was more interested in wether this method would actually work, than making P2P, I havent really any intention of cooking up anything illegal that way.

Good idea, toluene is dirt cheap as a starting point :D

That has to be the most lame excuse I've ever heard. Converting phenylacetone to phenol is a hideous crime for a chemist.

Furthermore, this has to be the 101st time I'm telling you this LESTAT, use:

GOOGLE

Closed.

One more thing like this and you're gone again. And this time I'll ban your whole IP range.
