ETN used as a primary?

Forumdude - 15-2-2013 at 19:56

On a few videos on youtube

For this video, what else could have he used? He seems credible if you look at his other videos.

New to the forum........

As soon as i posted this i realized there was a large post by Melgar discussing ETN reaction with aluminum.......Subject: Detonation of erythritol tetranitrate (ETN) with heated aluminum

Redundant post.

yes and that is what that diagram is from

You do realize there is an edit post function.
Vs making 3 posts 1/2 hour apart.

Is there an issue with a conventional blasting cap design ?
I would be extremely careful casting ETN.
It's like heat NG to 65*C.
I'd rather press LA or better Nickel Hydrazinium Nitrate.

Primarys

Forumdude - 15-2-2013 at 22:04

Ok thanks for the advice, and I am trying to stay away from primarys.I have been snooping around and ETN mixed with AL powder detonated with ETN and a whistle powder/flash powder seems to work but not reliably.

You have to understand each primaries limitations and properties..
Some are heat sensitive ... Some static and .... some impact.
There is no one "perfect" energetic. Just like there is no one perfect tool in the tool chest.
If a perfect tool existed ..... That would be the only one made..
Different tools for different applications.

I'd rather press HMTD.

:P j/k DON'T DO THAT!

NPED is fun to play with but it's really not practical or fully reliable. I remember NitricSynth posting those designs, and he said he was going to stick with LA after all was said and done. Hopefully that will sway your opinion as it did mine.

Phlegmatised poperly made LA is very safe. Very few things are better. If you don't need so much reliability flash/ETN in tough case works.
