Reflux/gas adapter question

luminouspath - 8-6-2013 at 10:20

Hi there, quick question about reflux condenser setups. Is it necessary to put a gas adapter on top of the condensor or will this allow the solvents in my reaction to escape?

Thanks

What do you mean? Your solvent should not reach the top of the condenser during reflux, if it does you need to use a longer one.

I think you've answered my question. If thats the case should be okay to just leave the top of the condensor open. Thanks!

Absolutely. Providing that the condenser is cold and long enough, no solvent should escape out the top of it, and sealing the system whilst heating is very dangerous indeed.
