Few months ago I opened up my ancient DVDplayer and I removed the laser apparatus, opened that up and revelaed a crystal it is a cuboid, I think it is Er:YAG(Erbium doped yittrium aluminum garnet) but i am not sure what it is any thoughts?

This is the apparatus:

and this is the crystal:

What color is the laser beam? Red? Er:YAG produces an infrared beam.

I hate to burst your bubble, but that's not a laser crystal (optical drives use diode lasers). That's simply a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beam_splitter" target="_blank">beam splitter</a> <img src="../scipics/_wiki.png" />.

Cheddit Cheese: It is an invisible beam.

bfesser: But as wikipedia shows there is a slit type thing diagonally passing through the cuboid but my doesnt have it, even if it is a beam splitter then what is it made of?

If I recall correctly, it's polycarbonate (same material as the optical disk itself) with a metallic coating. It's worth saving.

Thank you it is as valuable to me as a laser crystal, anyway I may store it in an ampoule.:)
