Anyone want Hydrazine Sulfate?

Praxichys - 23-5-2014 at 10:18

Hi everyone.

In the process of handing out that mercury, I met an interesting local source asking whether I would be interested in a 55lb fiber drum of hydrazine sulfate, leftovers from a Rochester MI pharma company, to break up and do the same thing I did with the mercury. I'm not sure how he got it but it appears sealed and is dated from 2012.

I would be able to dish it out at insanely low prices... $0.024 per gram. So:

50g for $1.20
100g for $2.40
250g for $6.00
500g for $12.00
1kg for $24.00

And since I can ship in an envelope, shipping is not likely to exceed $7 for anything less than a kg. International shipping available on request.

Should I do it?

plante1999 - 23-5-2014 at 10:21

YES, most definitely.

Burner - 23-5-2014 at 11:29

Absolutely!

HgDinis25 - 23-5-2014 at 12:27

About International shipping, how much would it cost to ship, say 100g, to Europe?

Metacelsus - 23-5-2014 at 18:23

You are right, that price is insane (much cheaper than making it). If you are going to sell it, I will gladly take a kilogram.

Dr.Bob - 23-5-2014 at 18:59

That is an insanely good price on that. If I did not already have some, I might buy it. You have done pretty well to find that deal. You still might want to put it in some plastic bottles for shipping, but it should be much easier to ship than Hg.

Rogeryermaw - 23-5-2014 at 19:40

i'd love a pound.

BobD1001 - 23-5-2014 at 21:46

Absolutely!

gdflp - 24-5-2014 at 04:29

Yes definitely

hyfalcon - 24-5-2014 at 06:58

I'll take a kg myself.

Blue Matter - 24-5-2014 at 09:04

Reserve a kg for me please.

TheChemiKid - 25-5-2014 at 06:13

Definitely!

Bert - 25-5-2014 at 09:17

I checked the shipping regs, reportable quantity is 1 lb.

If you ship 454 grams or more of this of this in the USA, you will need to be a certified hazmat shipper, place the appropriate hazmat markings on the package & etc.

I suggest you limit any single package shipped to 400 grams maximum- And learn the HazMat shipping regulations.

If you can get this together and ship it legally, I will be happy to take several (separately shipped!) 400gr lots. I can point you towards the regulations you'd need to learn as well.

UnintentionalChaos - 25-5-2014 at 19:12

With regards to Bert's comments above, I'd be interested in perhaps 2 or three packages. 1300g is 10mol..more than I am likely to use any time in the near future.

Zephyr - 25-5-2014 at 23:12

I too would be interested.

numos - 26-5-2014 at 22:18

I myself would like 500 grams.

MrHomeScientist - 27-5-2014 at 06:45

I suppose I'll jump on the bandwagon and request 250g as well. Not sure what I'd use it for, but it's hard to pass up an opportunity for more stuff!

zenosx - 27-5-2014 at 18:11

Put me down for a half kilo at least.

What regulation defines EPA RQ's as the need for certification?
I'm looking at §173.154(b)

"Limited quantities of corrosive material (Class 8) in Packing Groups II and III are excepted from labeling requirements, unless the material is offered for transportation or transported by aircraft, and are excepted from the specification packaging requirements of this subchapter when packaged in combination packagings according to this paragraph.

(1) For corrosive materials in Packing Group II, inner packagings not over 1.0 L (0.3 gallon) net capacity each for liquids or not over 1.0 kg (2.2 pounds) net capacity each for solids, packed in a strong outer packaging.

(2) For corrosive materials in Packing Group III, inner packagings not over 5.0 L (1.3 gallons) net capacity each for liquids or not over 5.0 kg (11 lbs) net capacity each for solids, packed in a strong outer packaging."

The shipping of hydrazine sulfate is interesting. Some people (the mid to small distributors) send it class 8 UN1759 PGII, some send it UN3260 PG II (Cole-Parmer) or III (Baker, Thomas). Fisher sent it class 8 UN3260 PGII until it became Thermo Fisher, now it's UN3288 PGIII class 6.1, like Alfa sends it, which is bad for ground shipping. Aldrich of course sends it class 8 UN2923 PGIII, which is bad for air shipment exemption.

Your best bet really is to find out how UPS and/or FedEx classify it, as they are your most likely shippers. NO HazMat except some finished consumer products moves legally by USPS. And if you're going for exempt size, other motor freight carriers make little sense.

It appears you WILL have to register & train to be able to ship even exempt quantities of HazMat chemicals by UPS or FedEx ground inside USA.

(Edit)

UPS will not ship ANY quantity of hydrazine sulfate.

FedEx

??? Can't yet locate it in their guidelines. Will call during business hours and ask...

DHL ships lots of stuff and i recall even hearing they GURANTEE that the item comes forward
but if you would order it im sure this would be something around sodium borohydride thread over again

i'd say go for it 100%, take it as an investment the none the less

Says who? According to what rules, exactly, specifically for non- employee non-employers?

The Volatile Chemist - 29-5-2014 at 10:25

Wow! I wouldn't be able to buy it (Parental OnLine Purchase Limitations), But it's worth the investment, definitely! This is more proof we should start up a new sub-forum for this, it's happening more often -- See http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=30386 post for details.

Bert - 29-5-2014 at 12:22

After talking to FedEx, anyone shipping hydrazine sulfate by ground in USA needs to be a trained hazmat shipper and able to prove that when requested. If you want to ship greater than exempted quantity, you WILL have to prove this to them and start an account with them.

Anyone shipping it by air (inside the lower 48 states, internationaly or to AK, HI, etc.) has to have IATA training and keep 13 months records. Don't have to prove that to FedEx, just to the FAA when they call on you after an audit of FedEx hazmat shipping (which is a FREQUENT occurrence).

The exemption quantities and labeling requirements are in force as well, of course.

Ground exemption is less than 1 lb., maximum package size is? air exemption is 30 grams, maximum package size is 1 kg. Exempt quantities STILL REQUIRE TRAINING/REGISTRATION. They just get labeled "exempt quantity" instead of needing the 4" diamond on point placard.

Welcome to my world, where the Department of Transportation decides how oh so many things will be done.

You should maintain the records for DOT inspection for 3 years.

I ship dangerous goods on a rather frequent basis, usually in semi-bulk. So let's look it up under the HMT and see what restrictions there are on shipping it:

Oh wait, it's not there specifically. Doesn't necessarily mean it's shippable w/o training.

It would go as a DOT 8 : Corrosive solid, n.o.s. (Hydrazine sulfate) : UN1759 PG: II

You can probably ship it in an overpack under a DOT Special Permit.

We also use that salt on a rather frequent basis, so if you want to sell all of it, I would be interested.

I'll take 400g if you decide to move ahead with this U2U me!

Zephyr - 9-6-2014 at 09:04

Please reserve 500g for me.
Thank you.

chemrox - 9-6-2014 at 12:55

I pass on that crap when dealing with individuals and small quantities. UPS and FedEx both send environmental samples without further inquiry.

alive&kickin - 25-6-2014 at 19:17

any left? i would be interested in 2 lbs.

PHILOU Zrealone - 26-6-2014 at 10:22

I have found a source of N2H4 24% in water for 84.4€/5L in Belgium I thought it was forbidden by European regulations.

palladium8 - 28-9-2014 at 19:56

I'll buy 1 kilogram if you don't mark it as hazmat/hazardous.

The Volatile Chemist - 29-9-2014 at 05:23

These guys seem like they're fishing for people to trip up. Of course ship it with hazardous marking.

Endo - 30-9-2014 at 05:54

I also would buy 400g from you.

Praxichys - 30-9-2014 at 06:46

Sorry everyone, I declined the offer months ago on the grounds that I would rather not get into trouble shipping something illegally.
