Bandwidth trouble & images

Polverone - 26-2-2005 at 03:31

I have discovered that I am almost certainly going to be paying bandwidth overages this month for going past the 10 GB of traffic that my hosting plan allows. I have searched for the source of this problem, and discovered (among other things) that there are many images stored in scipics that are greater than 100 K in size. Yes, this is my fault for not making sure that the "guardian" script ran regularly. Here are the images:

All of these files have been automatically reduced to under 100 K with a little script I wrote. If you think that my autoshrinker rendered your image ugly or illegible, find posts where you have referenced it and replace it with a modified image of your own (under 100 K, or not hosted on sciencemadness). In case you don't happen to have a local backup of your pictures, I have saved the original too-large images in http://www.sciencemadness.org/scipics/toolarge/. You may retrieve them from that location, but I will permanently delete them in a week or so.

What a surprise

As it turns out, we did exceed the month's bandwidth limit but the effect was to shut down sciencemadness rather than charge me money for extra bandwidth. I'm glad that February is a short month! I hope that shrinking the images and moving all PDF files to BromicAcid's host will prevent a recurrence of this lapse in service, but that depends on how much the site continues to grow. I know that this site is busier than it was just a few months ago. I'm often surprised by how many registered members and guests are logged in.

If the growth doesn't slow, I will soon need to get myself a higher-bandwidth account and move the forum and everything else over to it. Fortunately I was about to buy another account for unrelated and less demanding purposes, so maybe I can move this site over to a new account and use this account for my smaller project. We'll see.

In any case, it's good to be back!

It was cruel, these days of SCM withdrawal.
Puhhh!
I am still shivering, I had to take heaps of drugs to soothen me! I hope now I will recover slowly..... ;)

And, no, offline surfing isnt the real thing - its like beer without alcohol.

Thankfully that’s over with now. :)

I didn’t quite know what to do with myself without Sciencemadness around.:o

Why dont you put some sort of donate link, I am sure some members would contribute,as would I.

Seems we all have an addiction to the drug called science, kindly provided by this forum.

I was also left without anything to do without good 'ol MSDB.

Thank god it's up again. :)

Trouble brewing, again

While we were doing fine at the beginning of the month, 7/10 gigabytes of bandwidth have now been used. I suspect that we are victims of a low-grade denial of service attack designed to exhaust our bandwidth.

In the server logs I found 3 IPs that were downloading suspiciously large amounts of content. The first, from Mexico, has downloaded 2.8 GB. This is far in excess of what is needed to download everything on this site. The second, from Finland, has downloaded 384 MB. Maybe they're just trying to copy the entire board. The third, from Brazil, has downloaded 1.25 GB. All 3 are getting IP banned. Those 3 users have used nearly half of the site's entire bandwidth allocation for the month. Of course, that's assuming that there really are 3 separate users doing this and they're not just proxies for the real bandwidth-hog.

I wonder if that nutjob "ChemicallyImbalanced" has anything to do with this. It's quite likely that we will suffer some downtime this month.

I rejected a number of U2U offers for financial help in moving to more substantial hosting, but I might have to accept them now. I can't stand to see the site overwhelmed this easily.

Sounds like a try of DDoS-attack with three trojan-infected computers. Wonder who dislikes this board so much.

Could the hosting-firm keep an eye on the traffic or help somehow in this situation?
