Should the Whimsy password be changed?

sparkgap - 2-3-2005 at 05:49

The time the MSDB was down, I was surfing other sites (with Google's assistance, of course) that may have made mention of MSDB. I then happened upon some posts by our "friend" :P PolytheneSam encouraging his fellow, uh, goody-two-shoes to visit this site and see how much some of us hate Bu$h and how a bunch of terrorists we are for being curious about energetic materials. (ah, heck, I don't think they read the rest of this forum, given the amount of learning (I assume) that they have.)

There was a special mention of our "Whimsy" forum, and this guy thus reveals the Whimsy password so that his fellow do-gooders can read our rants and then rant about us hoping that we blow ourselves up one of these days... :o

So I now want to ask the rest of MSDB: should the Whimsy password be changed?

sparky (^_^)

P.S. Entering the search string "+sciencemadness +whimsy +password" on Google reveals links that, apart from MSDB posts, are link-bomb/rant posts by PolytheneSam. So much for protecting Whimsy from k3wls...

Sure, if there's a way to avoid having hundreds of new password requests go to the moderators. My U2U inbox gets full enough as it is. Members telling other members what the password is, maybe? Of course it would be pretty trivial for PE Sam to figure out the password and give it out again. The password was only intended to keep search engines and casual visitors out. I'll see if there's a way to keep unregistered members from viewing there.

In dutch we say they're preaching to those that have already been converted.

Do you really think I trade in one second of sleep because some christian nutcase hilbilly who's never seen something else but his own almighty backyard thinks we suck?

Not really, vulture. :D

I was actually more concerned about this little security breach from our link-bomber pal.

Polverone:

I tried to enter Whimsy without logging in. Turns out it's accessible as long as the password is known.

I don't know, but maybe the "casual visitor" can figure out the Whimsy password without asking any Admins, thus defeating the purpose of "send a U2U to an admin to get the password". Then again, would a k3wl be considered a "casual visitor"?

A (crazy?) idea: how about if the Whimsy password should be made available only to those who have contributed a set number of posts in other forums. Feel free to criticize if this is not a good one.

I used to be an active poster of this board, for various reasons I prefer lurking nowdays, preferably without beeing logged in.
Not that I could not do without whimsy, there is alot of noise to signal, I find it rather amusing at times.

cyclonite4 - 4-3-2005 at 05:12

I support sparkgap's idea.

Question is: What is a good number of posts to set the minimum at? (It should be small, so people don't have to wait forever to get in, but enough that a k3\/\/L wouldn't be bothered posting. Their character can also be determined in those initial posts, to filter k3\/\/L's out.)

neutrino - 4-3-2005 at 16:49

Maybe around 5-10?

PainKilla - 6-3-2005 at 10:16

I think it should be around 20. This way, we know by this time if the member is a kewl or not. Once we know, then we can tell him/her (i wish) the password :D. This prevents password from getting out but keeps valuable new members in too. It's not hard to get 20 posts. They should just be good quality posts. A few members should be appointed as password giver people. This way it's not just the mods giving it out. 1 person tell two, they tell 3-4 etc.... but no nubs ;).

You mean revealing the password Ponzi-style? :o

Now I'm starting to think my idea was crazy after all...

PainKilla - 6-3-2005 at 18:43

What does that lnik have to do with anything we aren't making anyone pay us.

Basically, first off prereqisites to get password is 20 quaility posts say. Then, the mods tell like 10 people, etc.... I mean it's sorta like a pyramid, except everyone gets good payoff :).

sparkgap - 7-3-2005 at 03:08

I guess you slightly got lost in the analogy. I posted the link so that those who may not be aware of who Ponzi was may have their curiosity satisfied. You were, however, saying that your scheme acts pyramid-wise; hence my analogy. :D My apologies.

Hello If_6_was_9, welcome back to our little community. Enjoy your stay :D

The_Davster - 19-3-2005 at 14:57

No one has a problem getting it. It is the third result on google.

Google search: whimsy password sciencemadness

PS: Chemoleo, how do you know DEA and If_6_was_9 are the same user? IP?

chemoleo - 19-3-2005 at 15:00

Ah, that would be telling :)
Nonetheless, great satan knows I am right :)

Ah yes, lets change the password once and lets ban DEA/Sam/Satan again too.

The known members can spread the new pwd under themselves to keep the load on the administration low I suggest.

aaannnd that's the end of that.

Polverone - 19-3-2005 at 18:36

Goodbye, nutbar. The suggested change of password will take place now. Old members message me for the password, then spread it to others as your discretion dictates. I don't really care about preventing people from viewing Whimsy, but I don't like Internet Monkeys to come in here and start flinging their feces.

Organikum - 19-3-2005 at 18:37

ok.
