Special Order Chemicals for October

Special Order Deadline Oct. 26

Hi All,

Ready to start looking at Special Order Chemicals for October. I've retained the same list of special order chemicals from last month. I believe I have a few items left over from previous months, where I ordered a couple extra. These include Sodium Azide, Aluminum Chloride Anhydrous, Triethethylamine, and Benzophenone. If you order these now, I can ship them before the end of the month. (Quantities are limited!)

If there are additional chemicals you'd like me to look into, please let me know. Also, if you have additional feedback, let me know that, as well. I'm trying to keep prices in check, but it's not easy. Shipping a couple of these chemicals has also been problematic, but I'm learning as I go. I also realize that some of the orders have taken a long time to fill. I'm afraid that may just be a fact of life with this program, as I can't always predict the availability of some of the chemicals.

Hopefully, this program is proving to be helpful. I certainly appreciate your business and your support.

Tom,

I would like to see the following as special order chems:

p-toluenesulfonyl chloride
methanesulfonyl chloride
methyl iodide

Any chance that these can be sourced in quantities suitable for citizen scientist use?

AvB,

Thanks for asking.

p-toluenesulfonyl chloride is the only one I can ship via UPS or FedEx. The other two would have to go freight, 2 ways, which would be prohibitively expensive.

p-toluenesulfonyl chloride - 100g--> $46
p-toluenesulfonyl chloride - 500g --> $70

Both would have hazardous shipping charges of $30.

Let me know if there is enough interest and I could add it to the list.

p–dimethylaminobenzaldehyde?

careysub - 13-10-2014 at 11:45

I am building out an alkaloid test kit (inspired by http://www.thehomescientist.com/forensics/Illustrated_Guide_...)
and need p–dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DMAB) to make Ehrlich's reagent.

p–dimethylaminobenzaldehyde

I have found that p–dimethylaminobenzaldehyde is not widely available, so is quite expensive. Following are two options:

p–dimethylaminobenzaldehyde 100 g ==> $175
p–dimethylaminobenzaldehyde 25 g ==> $69

I will add those two options to the website and hopefully, that will work for you.

Thx.

Interesting - it is the standard detection reagent for a whole class of alkaloids. I am surprised that it is scarce. You learn something every day. (I couldn't have learned that without asking.)

At those prices I'll pass, but thanks.

I suppose you cannot manage red phosphorus, because of the legal reasons?

What would pricing be on carbon disulfide? somewhere between 250ml and 1L would be nice, price depending.

Is it bad form in this forum if I say that you can find p–dimethylaminobenzaldehyde on eBay for MUCH less than that?

Hey, I'm supporting the program with dollars. I bought some special order chemicals last month, and I expect to do so this month!

UnintentionalChaos - 14-10-2014 at 13:24

I would be all over a lot of this stuff if I had funds...

I hate to ask, but how off-the-table is NaH dispersion in mineral oil?

That's what I love about this forum... brutal honesty. Plus I learn a lot.

I did a little more research using alternate names,
4-(Dimethylamino)benzaldehyde and 4-(DIMETHYLAMINO)BENZALD. I was able to find some additional suppliers and ACS grade for much less.

4-(Dimethylamino)benzaldehyde - 100g ==> $49.

I've updated the website and eliminated the 25g option. Hope this one looks better to you all.

I should also add that I do appreciate the feedback on the pricing, service, and quality. That works much better than no feedback and no purchasing. I'll do what I can to provide the right product for the right price.

Thanks.

Red Phosphorus and Carbon Disulfide cannot be shipped by FedEx or UPS. That means it has to go freight, which is not economical for small shipments. These also require additional paperwork - adding to the cost.

Looks like I can get 100 g of Sodium Hydride, 60% dispersion in mineral oil for about $57. It would ship Hazardous - $30.

Let me know if interested and I can add it.

AvBaeyer - 14-10-2014 at 20:38

Tom,

I would be interested in p-toluenesulfonyl chloride (500g) as well as the sodium hydride.

Thanks for your help with these.

My social skills are weak, so I gotta ask: does this mean that my comment wasn't welcome with you? Or that you actually appreciated it?

hyfalcon - 15-10-2014 at 10:53

I would rather source from and established business that deals with the big chemical companies in THIS country than the questionable source from some fly by nighters on eBay.

FWIW, one of the sources is in West Virginia, USA.

I'd like to point out that my comment caused the price of one of the items to decrease from $175 to $49. That seems like a good service for the community, no?

EDIT: I thought I recognized your username, so I looked around and yes, you're the guy who, instead of actually contributing to the topic in one of the threads I started, were all offended about the place where the thread was started. It seems to me.... that you have some random, unhealthy interest in me :D

[Edited on 15-10-2014 by DrMario]

hyfalcon - 15-10-2014 at 12:22

I don't know if I do or don't yet. I'll wait till you speak again and then decide. I just react to what is said, not necessarily who's saying it.

Should I???;)

Which thread was that? I'll look at it and either stand by it or apologize. Whichever I feel more appropriate.

Are you sure you're talking about me??? I've looked at all 42 of your posts and still don't see where we've intersected before! :(

Number 4 is what I was referring to in that post.

Also what the poster was saying 2 posts up.

It is often very hard to tell the emotional content of a post. Suggesting a post would be a better fit under a different heading strikes me as being primarily interested in keeping this forum useful rather than some sort of personal attack.
Prices of chemicals do vary widely depending on a lot of factors, including the fact that on EBay you are buying a pig in a poke. It COULD be the deal of a lifetime, but it also could be a total ripoff. If you have experience actually buying a chemical of a purity comparable to what Tom is offering, that is certainly valuable data to give to Tom and to us. OTOH, if you only saw a listing that seemed to be offering such and such an item for such and such a price, I'm not sure that would contribute much to the conversation about what price Tom, a legitimate and proven honest dealer, can sell for.

hyfalcon - 15-10-2014 at 12:59

Back to the referenced post. A simple question involving copper chemistry with no references to a paper of said chemistry should have been started in the beginners section. If you don't understand that, then I suggest you re-read the link I just gave you.

And you should be U2U-ing and cluttering up this thread with off-topic personal back-and-forths!

(I believe my comment about supporting Elemental with purchasing was at issue above. No, not offended - but I was pointing out that I was not abandoning Elemental just because a particular reagent was - currently - priced too high. I may buy stuff on eBay on occasion to stretch my overall budget, but it is not coming out of the Elemental purchase budget.)

tomholm - 15-10-2014 at 19:41

FYI. Here's a summary of new chemicals that have been added recently.

p-toluenesulfonyl chloride 100g $45.00
p-toluenesulfonyl chloride 500g $75.00
4-(Dimethylamino)benzaldehyde 100 g $49.00
Sodium Hydride 60% dispersion in mineral oil 100 g $57.00
Phthalic anhydride, ACS reagent, 500g $65.00

I'd be interested in propylene carbonate. Its not especially hazardous but seems not to be available at distributors who will sell to individuals. There are probably a few others who might be interested as well.

I have seen several recommendations that propylene carbonate be adopted as an environmentally friendly replacement for other solvents. It is also used in Cover Girl mascara. So I would gather it is pretty innocuous as organic solvents go.

tomholm - 17-10-2014 at 12:06

I added Propylene Carbonate, 500ml to Elementalscientific.net website.

mr.crow - 19-10-2014 at 10:02

What can I say, I'm extremely impressed by Tom's service. He goes out of his way to send you dangerous, hard to find things shipped properly and legally. Name brand reagents from Acros Organics and Alfa Aesar. UPS could play football with the box and it wouldn't break.

The other option is to buy from Polish eBay and get who knows what thrown into a normal box that might leak and/or gets seized by customs.

zenosx - 19-10-2014 at 17:10

I would also be interested in p–dimethylaminobenzaldehyde if you do decide to stock it.

And BTW that is really awesome that you are probing your customer base for what to stock, including hard to find stuff. Hope we can keep you profitable!

I do have the p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in 100 g size available for special order( CHSO-23-100). Overtime, I will review the interest in certain special order chemicals and, if there has been enough demand for it, I may decide to stock a little of it. It depends on demand, price, my availability, etc.

I, too, hope I can continue to perform this service and be profitable. (If it were an easy profit, everyone would be doing it.)

Thanks for your support.

If I buy special order chemicals (phosphorous tribromide) and non-special order chemicals (acetyl chloride, phenol, and vanadium pentoxide), can they be shipped together in the same exemption pack to save on shipping?

Those four are not compatible and must be shipped separately. So I'm afraid that we can't combine and save $$. Sometimes it works out, other times it doesn't.
