energetic materials with the epoxy group

I have a question about the epoxy group -H(C-O-C)H- in chemicals which will be used for energetic materials.
I believing maybe the specific properties (melt point, solubility ...) of the epoxy group make they suitable for special applications.

Example is when 1-hydroxy-2-chlorocyclobutan is
reacted to 1,2-epoxycyclobutan and than threated with
HNO3 and H2SO4 to 1,2-epoxy,3,4-dinitrocyclobutan.
Is the epoxy group stable too for nitration or the chemical must be nitrated bevor the epoxyation of the cyclobutan.
