Chemical phobia?

I got this article from another forum. It seems a little fishy to me.

Well I think we should scratch Sodium Benzoate off our chemical lists soon.

My favorite line:
"...this should be done urgently because the drinks were being marketed to children."

I don't think it will have any effect outside the drink manufacturer's world. Many commonly available chems are fine by themselves but can react to form other nasty chems. Think bleach. That never stopped the sale of bleach.

I can't get the link to work. Is this about fizzy drinks containing traces of benzine due to the sodium benzoate reacting with vitamin C?

The link works fine for me, are you selecting the entire line and pasting it into your browser address bar?

But yes, the article talks about benzene in soft drinks due to the reaction between sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid :P

Here is the clickable link, I've fixed it:

surel the reaction between the two would simply produce sodium citrate (harmless) and Benzoic acid (also harmless in those quantities).

I only wish it WAS that simple to produce Benzene that way :)
