Help... I have problem

BeckhamStZ - 31-5-2006 at 00:56

I have a problem with one scheme:
C6H6 + Br2 -> A
A + 2NaOH -> B
B + HCl -> C
C + 3HNO3 -> D + 3H2O

I think that A is bromobenzen and the reaction is
C6H6 + Br2 -> C6H5Br + HBr
but what is B!? is that true :
C6H5Br + 2NaOH -> C6H5ONa +NaBr +H2O
or not??? :o

Wow, and interesting homework question, for onceā€¦

To give you a hint;

Your end product will be 2,4,6,-Trinitrophenol...;)

Edit: Chlorobenzene with also work in that reaction, good to know.:)

Yes it's interesting ;)
i know what is the end product but and the C is phenol but what is B !? and i don't know if C6H5Br + 2NaOH -> C6H5ONa +NaBr +H2O is true.
I know for chlorobenzene ;) but thanks

Yeah that's probably what's going on. If it were 1 NaOH, it would be phenol + NaBr, but it's 2 so it must be the salt.
