Silver Oxide. Black/brown or purple?

bolbol - 14-3-2015 at 18:51

On wikipedia this stuff is said to be brown or black and it also has pictures showing it.

I also found some silver oxide on ebay recently and it has a purple color to it... or im colorblind and I just realized...

Here is a picture directly from the post

Does this have anything to do with color change due to being exposed to light or ...?

i know my silver chloride always turns purple on the outside but stays white on the inside when i crumble the clumped up mass.

When exposed to light, doesn't the AgCl decompose to Silver and Chlorine? If it does indeed decompose to silver then why is it purple at all? Is that the color of silver when the particle size is small? I know gold is brown color when in fine powder and I thought maybe the same happens with silver

The ~15g of silver oxide I made (for safe transport) was completely black. Nothing purple about it.

Silver(I) oxide is black or very dark grey. Maybe the picture looks somewhat purple, due to off-white lighting.
