Missing persons

j_sum1 - 23-3-2016 at 14:00

This board has been home to some wonderful personalities. Some of them appear for a while then suddenly disappear. Some have made great contributions in the past but are unknown to newer users. I often find myself wondering what happened to them.

This thread is dedicated to such. And to the question of "Where are they now?"

zombie
One of the greats. His own brand of irreverent humour and irrepressible enthusiasm. I would love to know how his lab is coming together.

hkparker
I only know him from his excellent yt channel. He was a big contributor a few years back, disappeared for a while and then returned to sell his gear. Anyone know what he is up to now?

len1
Prolific and knowledgeable. Some classic write-ups and I believe fondly remembered. I am sure someone knows the story.

JohnWW
Ok, this maybe is an obscure one. And I admit to not doing a full search on his posts. My interest is related to some things on his profile rather than his chemistry posts. But he was a very eager participant here and has a huge post count. Then suddenly, nothing.

myst32
Ok, this one is not really a mystery. He explained himself here. Not a big poster (under that name) but a fantastic yt channel. I wonder what he is up to now. Given a chance I'd say thank you personally.

Robert Bruce Thompson
Not a member here to my knowledge. His book is mentioned regularly and is one I think I should get. He has obviously been busy in producing books and in his work in the field of home schooling. But his YT channel ended abruptly. His lab is probably the neatest and most organised home lab that I have seen. I am curious as to why he stopped.

aga - 23-3-2016 at 15:07

Personalities move on, get busy with other things, die etc.

Some re-incarnate with new usernames (repeatedly it seems recently).

Doing/posting interesting Chemistry might one day see the return of the likes of len1.

Patience.

Daffodile - 23-3-2016 at 15:25

What about vulture? I know he was around a little while ago, but it seems he's gone off as well.

aga - 23-3-2016 at 16:07

vulture is still a mod too.

I guess this is basically j_sum1's wishlist, or an assumed list of absent/popular members.

Personally i would like to see CHRIS25 back here as well.

Artemus Gordon - 23-3-2016 at 17:00

hkparker's radio silence was due to his graduating high school and leaving home to go to college. He probably is gone at least until he graduates.

violet sin - 23-3-2016 at 17:00

Add DrAldehyde to the list... Tried contacting a number of times after buying a fume hood, none replied to. Sale was perfect, great price, no issues so contact wasnt negative in any way. Seemed like a really nice individual. The only SM member ive met in person sadly :(

He moved on, I have had dealings with him in other matters more recently than his last posts. Still, he will be missed. I do like that madscientist drops by a few times a year just to show he hasn't dropped totally off the radar. Vulture though, yeah, I still feel like he's watching.

IIRC - JohnWW had a falling out with the forum. I remember personally butting heads with him a few times. My favorite was in this thread.

Rosco Bodine - 24-3-2016 at 05:36

Sadly many of the missing are seniors, elderly people likely no longer in the world, attributable to natural or unnatural causes.

The "old farts" are interesting because they are too old to give a damn about being ideologically correct and will give you unfiltered unvarnished version observations about any topic whatever. Having one foot already in the grave, they simply don't care anymore about pretentiousness or about threatened "consequences" for PC "misbehavior", even "fear of death as a penalty" becomes almost a joke which would be equivalent to fearing the "threat" of being put out of ones misery :D Old people, like children are subject to saying any damn thing whatever....absent the "filter" of "it's true, ...but to be PC nobody should say it". They are then liberated by circumstances inclined to be brutally honest, take no prisoners, not PC, very straight shooters

Added to the missing, quicksilver, watson.fawkes,
The WiZard is In

And about Vulture.....affectionately "Big Bird" :D ....I tended to regard him as a kindred spirit "old buzzard" :D

I know that Organikum is still alive but unable to visit the forum at present. I saw watson.fawkes in person less than a month ago at a space conference. He just doesn't visit here any more because he felt that it was distracting him from tasks he wanted to spend more time on.

I agree with Rosco that a number of cases are likely due to age catching up with members; that seems the most likely explanation for quicksilver's abrupt disappearance. I miss not_important. I don't know if he was old enough for that explanation to be most likely in his case.

Xenoid - 24-3-2016 at 23:13

len1 is Leonid Lerner, a New Zealander now living in Australia as far as I know.

I gather he used his time on ScienceMadness as a sounding board for some of the procedures he used in his book - "Small-Scale Synthesis of Laboratory Reagents with Reaction Modeling"

Graduating with a BSc (Hons.) in 1984 and a MSc in 1985 from the Victoria University of Wellington, Leonid Lerner obtained his PhD in physics from Cambridge University, UK, in 1989. From 1990–1993 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Optical Science Centre and Laser Physics Centre of the Australian National University (ANU), and a lecturer in Physics ANU 1994–1996. Leonid has worked in a number of different fields in the natural sciences and has published in a range of scientific disciplines. Currently he is a research scientist at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, Adelaide, and Honorary Fellow at the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences, Flinders University, Adelaide. (from Amazon)

BromicAcid - 25-3-2016 at 03:40

I have to say, I miss Tacho, an excellent contributor to the forum.

Also, it's a shame NurdRage stopped coming around but glad he still makes videos.

Hey that's where I live, cool! Might run into him, especially if i'm lucky enough to score some work at the DSTO when I graduate.

Magpie - 25-3-2016 at 10:05

I miss garage chemist. He had the most knowledge and insight into chemistry, IMO. His skill was built on active experimentation. He was a leader in many ways.

I also miss benzylchloride1. He was precocious, starting his PhD study at the University of Utah at an early age. The last I heard from him he had earned his degree. He's probably too busy now with a job and family to pursue this hobby.

I miss Sauron, his wit, and his wealth of experience. I suspect he is enfeebled or dead.

I miss Len1. I think he was the most erudite of all our contributors.

len1, organikum -- both in Oz. Yay for aussie chemistry.
If you do get within range of len1, Tdep, do look him up.

Yeah there are a number of names here of note.

Let me add another. I always wondered what happened to gardul's cats. Doing chem in a small apartment was always going to have issues though.

[edit]
Thanks for the link to deuterated acetone, Bromicacid. The whole thing looked like a bit of a mud-sling. Interesting to see how board culture has and hasn't changed since 2004. That was a more technical mud sling than we are used to now. Vulture's admonition concerning single line posts was also interesting.

Ayush: Was a prolific references getter just like our present angel Solo.

Alter: Who uploaded complete archives of several journals like J med Chem, Chem Rev, JACS, JOC, I & EC etc etc to madhatter's FTP. BTW this predated sci-hub.

KmnO4: who had wonderful internet searching knack and also uploaded several books and journals.

I also miss Not_Important, Watson.fawkes, Garage Chemist amongst many others.

If I never met those guys here I would never learn chemistry the way I did. I remember when I asked for something not_important always got the answer, just basic chemistry questions. It was in 2010. Now I won't have a career in chemistry but people ask me how do you know so much chemistry, I just smile and think of this place. I get along well with people in medical field because of that. Thumbs up for the old guys!

I’ve heard through another mailing list that The WiZard is In died somewhat recently. I enjoyed his unusual way of replying by posting all kinds of obscure, odd and amusing yet surprisingly relevant literature. He must have had an incredible memory.

Bert - 4-9-2017 at 10:04

The WiZ had an incredible LIBRARY to back up that memory of his. an omnivorous collection of energetic materials related publications, from long before the internet and up to this year, he rat holed away everything he found online or printed, and had several searches configured to find MORE running constantly.

If he has truly passed, someone needs to secure, curate and preserve Donald's archives ASAP. I have a post in whimsy regarding this as well, made about 5 minutes before I discovered this thread-

Melgar - 17-9-2017 at 13:43

I was active here around 2010-2011, then dropped off the radar for five years pursing non-chemistry interests. Then I met another amateur chemist in real life, got interested in chemistry again, and came back. Stuff like this happens regularly.

Would anyone here like to have free access to an FTP server? I could set one up that anyone can upload to, but only I could delete from, that way nobody can delete each other's stuff. I might have to put a limit on it at about 500 MB, since 700 MB is a common size for pirated data, which I'd obviously want to discourage.

Tdep - 6-11-2017 at 19:32

Has anyone heard from careysub in a while? He was a real frequent poster but hasn't now been on since January. He also didn't complete his 2016 secret Santa, even after much discussion with me about it, so it's hard not to worry really.

While we are at it, does anyone have contact with zombie? He was a very prolific poster, very enthusiastic and added a certain personality to the place.
When he left he intimated that he needed to devote more time to his business but I was not expecting him to drop off the planet completely.

(I don't think our forum redneck ever got to meet our forum hillbilly.)

violet sin - 11-11-2017 at 22:36

I'd begin to formulate some reply to many threads only to find he'd just said it.

Some or all of his estate including books was sold at auction Nov 4 of last year. Hopefully they found loving homes.

...a certain scene in About Schmidt comes to mind even so.

The jersey rebel - 16-11-2018 at 13:28

I'm primarily concerned about Praxies (hope I spelled that correctly) tbh. He seems like the most concerning disappearance given the context of being in the middle of a very dangerous experiment and seemingly not having posted anything online since, coupled with the lack of knowledge of his fate.

The worst aspect of any investigation is the unknown. The only thing that scares me is what I don't know because that's what has consistently harmed me physically and mentally growing up.

if I do find anything, I absolutely will share it with you guys for at least to give closure. been trying to see what I can find. but since I must make assumptions, like doug being a shorthand for douglas, and having many blanks in his bio, it's super difficult to get any info in the person search or god for bid the obituaries.

j_sum1 - 16-11-2018 at 15:31

I believe that Texium has direct contact with Praxychus and that he is ok: just busy.

He had plans to make his YT vids regular -- one per month. But he also bought a house and got married. Such things can easily make for a change in priorities and it is easy to see how a hobby can take a back seat.

He is missed: both here and on youtube. I too hope that he is ok, but am not overly worried. It would be nice if he would check in.

Perhaps Texium can add a couple of details if he knows anything that can be shared.

Texium - 16-11-2018 at 21:49

Doug is fine.

I'm sure we'll be seeing more from him here in the (hopefully near) future.

fusso - 25-9-2019 at 13:12

I hope Praxichys (Doug's Lab) can start to upload vids again:(

Praxichys - 30-9-2019 at 09:22

That lab no longer exists, unfortunately. I ran out of time to make lab videos in mid 2018 while looking for a new house. We put some offers on a few in fall 2018 and closed on the new one in late Feb 2019, then moved in March. I have been busy completely renovating my old house to rent out.

However, the new place is on double-digit acreage and has an outbuilding which will be a dedicated lab, much like Ben Krasnow from Applied Science has. I have neither sold nor thrown anything away; it is all carefully packed into boxes and my intent is to rebuild once I have settled a bit.

There are a few caveats. The first is that the internet is awful. The only option for me is 3Mbps DSL, which means 1.5 on a good day and basically no internet on high traffic nights. I was promised 12Mbps DSL or a 100Mbps terrestrial wireless link but the wireless has no signal on my property even with a 60ft mast and the DSLAM at the end of the street has been saturated for a decade... so 3Mbps it is. It is physically impossible for me to upload to YouTube without putting the vids on a jump drive and taking them to my parent's house, which is a bummer.

The second is that my hobbies are changing quite a bit. I am installing 24 fruit trees and a substantial vegetable and herb garden. I will be getting bees and chickens in the spring. I have a tractor now and I am building a shooting range on the property. Despite insisting that I would never again buy a fixer-upper, I somehow got talked into it again and I am redoing the master bedroom and a few of the bathrooms in the house as well. We are planning for a spring wedding and I'll have a kid a year later, so there is a lot going on that has to take precedence over lab stuff.

Rest assured my interest in chemistry has not diminished and I am always looking for ways to incorporate chemistry into all of my hobbies. I would very much like to expand my YouTube channel to include a lot of these other things but scope of what I am working on even without filming and editing is daunting to say the least. In the meantime, I plan to remain a presence on ScienceMadness and maybe do some basic preps here and there.

WGTR - 30-9-2019 at 09:37

Country living is a good tradeoff for poor internet. I had the same situation, with only 1Mbps DSL available. I still wouldn't have moved back into town for anything.

As it turns out I hit the broadband internet lottery. A year after I moved to the country, our electric co-op started running fiber, and now we have fiber-to-the-house, with symmetrical speeds up to 1Gbps. Might want to ask your power company about it.

Praxichys - 30-9-2019 at 10:29

I am beginning to think so, too. I'm coming from a 150Mbps connection and by the last machine poll we were using around 650GB/mo, so there is a bit of culture shock about how we consume entertainment. A lot of that was 4k streaming because, hey, if the monitor supports it then why not? Now I can just go outside and play with heavy equipment and firearms instead of simulating it, which is nice, but I miss my ability to game or watch anything >480p.

The nights are very quiet and the stars are incredible out here. We had the wood stove going yesterday evening to put a couple degrees into the house and it smelled like dinner, wood smoke, and cedar. Now I just need to convince the wife to let me decorate with firearms and taxidermy. :D (Yeah, right!)

I never thought about talking to the the power company. I've had multiple chats with Comcast's engineering department about pulling fiber from town, even if I had to foot the bill over time. They're not interested, but perhaps the power company might be... I've sort of been banking on Elon Musk's Starlink coming into the picture in the next few years for low-latency satellite internet.

j_sum1 - 30-9-2019 at 14:03

That's all good news, Praxichys. (Apart from the dial-up speed internet.) Thanks for the update.

morganbw - 1-10-2019 at 09:05

@Praxichys
Thank you sir for what videos you have done. I do understand a little bit about life taking us in a different direction.

I hope that someday in the future you will be able to do more videos but just know that the ones that you have already done are greatly appreciated.

/CJ

j_sum1 - 17-10-2019 at 18:52

No. I don't know.

Before he disappeared I know he was having employment issues and was also waiting for some cash awarded following a court case. His stuff was mostly in storage. His family sounds a bit messy with numerous complex relationships. And he did not have a permanent place to live.

All things considered, it is not highly surprising if he is absent for an extended period.

Edit
I should add that the above information is from memory and it is possible that I have recalled details incorrectly.

Oh, that kinda sucks actually...... I would just like to post that his presence is missed and I wish him the best and hope he gets to read this at some point.

Anyone know what happened to PHILOU, his phone number changed and he was my favorite poster?

What about AXT or Labratory of Liptakov?

j_sum1 - 9-3-2020 at 23:55

I have not seen AXT for a long time. He was only just active when I joined.
PHILOU... Good point. Not sure. It would be good to know.
Liptakov is still active on YT unless I have my wires crossed. I think it might be a case of intermittency rather than dropping off.

I remember seeing PHILOU's comment on a chem vid explaining sth to layman, just a week or 2 ago...
so the channel should have quite a lot of subs in order to have a decent amount of questions from non-chemists

I think that the one that I miss the most is in Australia. I learned a lot from him.

Just passing by to say hello. I'm still alive, but occupied with other stuff.
I see moderators still manage to keep stuff from going out of control.

woelen - 12-7-2020 at 09:08

Nicodem, good to see that you are fine. I understand what you mean with being occupied with other things. But the situation most likely will change again and then I hope to see you here more frequently again :)

Let me guess, all hells broken loose in big pharma. Good to hear from you. Made me smile.
Now if not_important would show up all would be perfect, except for that pesky virus.

SWIM - 4-2-2022 at 12:03

Anybody heard from happyfooddance?

Disappeared around the time of the lockdown here in the US (was in Los Angeles I believe).

This poster was in the food services, a profession hit mighty hard by covid.

Just hoping it wasn't a financial disaster caused by a closed business.

My impression was HFD was fairly young and so probably not a covid casualty.

SplendidAcylation - 24-1-2023 at 14:07

Does anyone know what happened to Cou?
He hasn't been online since 26 Oct 2021... Only ten days after happyfooddance vanished.

Lately it seems as if everyone whose profile I click on has not been online for some time...

Let's just say that Cou was unsettled at the best of time -- lots of personal stuff going on. Lots of external and internal pressures.
It is not a surprise to me that he would take an extended break from here or change interest completely.

Right. Yeah, I thought that might be the case.
Still, his last post seemed entirely regular and not in any way indicative of an imminent departure.
Oh well! Hope he's doing well and, of course, that he returns some time.

I must admit I found some of his posts quite relatable...

Tsjerk - 25-1-2023 at 11:45

He did post under a different name for some time which he also used for his YouTube channel, don't remember what it was though.

I believe he said he was Cou using his new account.

Texium - 25-1-2023 at 12:25

Yep, last posted a little over a year ago with that account, but hasn't been active since: https://www.sciencemadness.org/whisper/member.php?action=vie...

SplendidAcylation - 25-1-2023 at 14:07

Hmmm. His website no longer works: https://michaelbijanafghani.com/

Also, I spoke with SWIM a few days before he went offline, he said he was taking a break and planning to come back.
He said two or three months but it has been six months, I hope he is doing okay.

Just in case anyone was wondering about him...
