Ethyl Chloride?

sonogashira - 11-9-2006 at 03:45

Does anyone know how i would go about making ethyl chloride? It must be relatively simple to make....
Can it be distilled from conc. HCl and ethanol??
Would i need some catalyst?

Methods involving easily available chemicals would be prefered...

Thanks in advance........

ethene + HCl -----------> ethyl chloride
.......................catalyst

ZnCl2 (anhydrous of course)

and you'll need quite a lot of it too.

Passing ethene + HCl over ZrCl4 on kieselguhr at 188°C gives a mixture of chloroethane and 2-methylpropane: US2425416

Passing ethene + HCl over a heavy metal oxide catalyst at 200-300°C (chief product chloroethane): DE361041

At -15°C: Chem. Zentralbl. II (1929) 1071 and DE478082

Passing ethene + HCl over aluminium at 300-350°C : DE403507

Fe2O3 as the catalyst: US2110141

Thanks for your responses...
A route from ethanol would be prefered... if one exists!!... even if the yields are quite poor.
Is there any way to make it from ethanol?

How about refluxing conc. HCl with ethanol, then distilling.... Would this work? (maybe with ZnCl2 catalyst?)

I only have basic lab equipment so passing gases over a catalyst at high temperatures doesn't seem very practical.. Could this be done in solution?

Do you even bother reading the replies to your questions? These were already answered.

Search the forum. I remember there was a paper on this issue uploaded in some thread where this and similar reactions were thoroughly discussed.

The mention of this catalyst came after the suggestion of reacting HCl with ethene... I thought it was refering to this... my mistake.

Nicodem, if you have a point to make please just make it without being rude...

I have searched the forum but couldn't find anything concerning the conversion of ethanol to ethyl chloride.. only ethene and HCl reactions... though perhaps i have missed something?

Indeed, you missed the thread discussing your reaction:

https://sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=2726

Here you have all you need, with detailed procedures for EtCl preparation included.

PS: I don't think that remembering the new members of the existence of the forum's search function and suggesting its use, is considered rude. On the contrary, it is considered a standard welcome and at the same time is also very practical. :P

Edit: Again, I remembered there are also other threads about chlorination of alcohols, but I'm not friendly enough to do more search. I'm sure you will find them with a little effort.

Thank you!! I had searched for ethyl chloride, chloroethane etc. with no luck... Many thanks for you help!

Maybe its possible to make it by reacting ethyl acetate with hydrochloric acid.

I have no idea what you just posted there.
ethyl?
HCL? (Chemistry uses actual elements, I believe you mean HCl)
MGM (I believe this is a famous casino in Las Vegas and a film studio, please define your crude abbreviations)

the bromide is easy enough to produce from ethanol. plenty of thread on the subject
