Chemistry Diamonds on YouTube

 Pages:  1

Velzee - 15-5-2016 at 08:05

This list may be added to the Wiki. Stay tuned.

I had an idea to gather and sort as many high quality and even obscure chemistry YouTube videos as I could, so I shall be attempting it here. I believe that this could shed some light on the lesser known compounds/reactions as well; I myself find a few great videos here and there while searching obscure reactions, yet they are often ones neglected by most amateur chemists.

Acetone:

Make Acetone Peroxide Do ***NOT*** attempt this unless you and your lab are suited with proper protection and experience. This is illegal in the United States.

Of course content creators can request for me to take down/put up their videos as they please. The list shall be further updated(as of right now, I am no where near done with it; I'm taking a break). If you have any suggestions(preferably videos that involve obscure reactions, synthesises, compounds, ect.) please post them and I'll add them to the list. A Radiochemistry section will be added soon.

Very good idea velzee, but the way you named the topic is weird , i thought that the post is all about real diamonds with their chemical property as a video on youtube ...ok anyway

Chemiston - 30-5-2016 at 02:29

I wish mods wont close the post because of acetone peroxide
Lol

Lab tips: Making sodium wire for drying solvents.

I couldn't get the link to post so this is simply the name of the video on you tube.

There is another good one by UC235 i think. He makes a lead/ sodium alloy especially made for drying solvents. He says that this is a much safer way to do this rather than using sodium by itself and would be good for those who don't have a lot of sodium to spare. Although he seems to draw out the video it is still pretty interesting.

I came across a channel recently -- new to me.
A lot of chemistry demonstration standards - nylon. elephant toothpaste etc, but quite well done.
A reasonable number of subscribers but traffic is slow and it has been around for a long time. I am a bit surprised that it hasn't received a mention here (that I know of).

Anyway,

Same thing as here but as a clunky series of stills & write-up.

brubei - 11-8-2016 at 22:25

Keeping the first post well clear is a great idea.

Velzee - 25-8-2016 at 16:23

I've created a Wiki page which contains the updated list: http://www.sciencemadness.org/smwiki/index.php/Chemistry_Dia...

Suggestions are welcome!

j_sum1 - 2-10-2016 at 17:14

I came across this channel
https://www.youtube.com/user/TheChemlife/videos

I have not watched many yet but it seems to be rather good -- with an emphasis on nanoparticles and electrical applications.

Fidelmios - 7-10-2016 at 21:44

Wow thanks for adding my stuff to the wiki. I feel most of my stuff is crude and basic now, but soon I hope to get my hands on some more fun reagents.

j_sum1 - 20-11-2016 at 00:43

Another channel I found that seems to be worth a watch:
https://www.youtube.com/user/mabakken/videos?sort=da&vie...

Again, I have not viewed a lot yet but they seem to be ok the ones I have watched. A lot of classic reactions but a good (if old) collection.

mayko - 9-1-2017 at 20:57

Some of the footage in this is gorgeous:

If you've never seen bulk magnesium burning, it's worth checking out; the metal undergoes a weird cauliflower-growth stage when it's not flaring. Sparks on the surface of the growth makes the whole thing look like a churning thundercloud. This captures it nicely (action starts ~ minute 2-3)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLt0cToM_vw

j_sum1 - 5-3-2017 at 03:22

I have started looking at this channel:
https://www.youtube.com/user/Hegelrast/videos

I have been rather impressed with the content. There are a lot of ideas worth repeating here. The cracking of hydrocarbons was well done. I might have to repeat that with my students. :)

j_sum1 - 18-3-2017 at 21:54

Ok. Not specifically chemistry. But awesome!
Actually I feel like I am late to the party for this one. It seems like the sort of thing I should have known about ages back.

A Capella Science. At least two YT channels and appearances on some others as well
https://www.youtube.com/user/acapellascience/videos
https://www.youtube.com/user/acapellascience2/videos

My favourites viewed so far:
Entropic Time. Supremely clever stuff.
Whole new worlds. A history of the discovery of exoplanets set to the soundtrack of Aladdin. Music is just awesome and there is some great humour.
Bohemian Gravity. String theory to the music of Queen. Admittedly some of the content of that one went over my head. But hey, it is string theory.

Anyway, enjoy!

Shameless self-promotion: I just made a video on burning diamonds, and put it on YouTube. Does that count? :P
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS6fWwpI1A0

I'm very pleased with how it turned out. They look absolutely beautiful when burning. Skip to about 10 minutes in if you're just interested in the actual experiment.

I have a similar clay extruder but easier to use as it has a screw thread for extrusion
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20-Tips-Metal-Clay-Extruder-Sugar...
So far I've only used it twice for sodium wire.
If you buy such a device (I have not really benefitted from it) then use the second-smallest hole
- or use the small hole if your lab is warm enough to make the sodium soft enough.

P.S. I've put sodium on water many times, even tried the 'transparent sodium' experiments a few times,
but when I put sodium wire on water it has so far never exploded....... must try harder !

Ok, I may have found a JACKPOT channel. "ChemicalForce".
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqONNjBkukcc2yXbmHL8niQ
An English-speaking Russian (at least, I think) chemistry channel which does many well-filmed experiments with REALLY exotic chemicals such as TiCl4, Na2O2, Decaborane, 100% HNO3, LiAlH4, and more. He's even done stuff with Liquid Acetylene & Methane! Seriously a great channel and has brought stuff to the table which hasn't been seen before! Take Decaborane + WFNA for example... BOOM!!

j_sum1 - 31-5-2018 at 14:56

List compiled by VSEPR_VOID in a thread he started.
I am appending them to this thread rather than merging the two threads so that the conversation is less confusing.
It would be great to add the channel names to this list. I will see if I can do that over the next couple of days.
Thanks for looking these up, VV.

I've added all the channels posted by VSEPR_VOID to my list of channels to backup.

The list below includes all the chemistry and glassware related channels I know about. The details were correct at the time I downloaded the videos for the channel.

I am still downloading FranklyChemistry and Brad Sieve. Everything else is complete.

Let me know if there are any other pieces of information that would be useful.

3. Rocket Science ... Without the Rocket. Part 2 Posted: 20170604 Views: 75

I watched this, and while I agree with the general idea of thrust vs. weight, I think you miss a nuance in that matchup. The reason why NAR urges the use of guide rods is to prevent a horizontal flight. This could be with a balanced motor, but if the payload is too much, it serves double duty. The rocket could make a horizontal trajectory with underpowered motors. The rod will force the impingement to do a number on the plate, but won't send it at spectators. You probably already cover that somewhere else, but I didn't see it in the comments.

j_sum1 - 2-6-2018 at 16:23

First of all, thanks sreety. That is an awesome list and would have taken a while to do. Much appreciated. There are a couple of channels there that I have not come across before and it looks like some good watching is in order.

I am going to add The gayest person on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/user/DorcotBaconPhD/videos

As a channel it is still in its infancy but the quality and the irreverent humour are right up there. A lot of subscribers for a mere 7 vids but rightly deserved. The thermites are among the best presentations I have seen of this reaction.

I am going to assume that he is a member here but I don't know who he is.

streety - 3-6-2018 at 07:03

You're welcome. It was actually a lot less work than you might imagine. I fairly short program to write.

The real work was downloading all the videos. That got completely out of hand. I've added "The gayest person on youtube" to my list of channels to track.

mayko - 29-12-2018 at 10:40

I don't like this because of great photography or an interesting reaction, but because it's a thought-provoking discussion of a common tendency in DIY science, to try to do rigorous research using only things found lying around. The emphasis in this video is on DIY molecular biology, but the core points are more broadly applicable. A familiar example from home chemistry might be OTC-mania, in which people propose long, roundabout synthetic routes from base materials rather than simply purchase their target molecule online.

I'm all for gluing trash to other trash, which I think can be rewarding practice and a useful prototyping process. But I definitely empathize with the frustration it can cause, when everything you own is stuck-together garbage. The proposed way forward is collectivization through shared workspaces, which has its pros and cons. I don't know that I've seen a good example of a traditional chemistry space in a hackerspace, but the molecular biology aspect of the group project in the video (organized by SM's chironex) looks like a promising model.

draculic acid69 - 18-3-2019 at 18:37

bdbdbd is doing some videos in the spirit of chemplayer.
Malia Helms, Kathryn Haas and acr92651 have some great videos about peptide synthesis.
Stutesman100 has one good video showing how to make 2cloroethanol.
All of the good channels seem to only make around 10 videos and then stop doing any more. There's about 30 now defunct channels I wish were still making awesome videos but I suppose everyone only has so much chemistry in them that they want to video.i think I've pretty much seen all YouTube has to offer in the way of amatuer chemistry videos.but there's still a few really good ones still making videos and building up steam.i hope they continue.

chemplayer... - 31-3-2019 at 19:53

bdbdbd is doing some great work - a bit more controversial than we ever were!

draculic acid69 - 31-3-2019 at 23:48

That depends on whether you think that sort of thing is controversial,I don't if anything I think it's (and I hate this saying) god's work because god's too lazy to make 2cb himself.theyre doing excellent work.very exciting and interesting feild.

chemplayer... - 1-4-2019 at 21:41

Controversial only in the sense of putting it onto YT. Great chemistry though, and good videos!

itsafineday - 3-4-2019 at 04:33

I just came across Chemical Force https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqONNjBkukcc2yXbmHL8niQ/vid...

Definitely not subtle. It is like chicken run with chemical bulldozers.
But it is an opportunity to see some reagents that most people would not get a chance to handle: which seems to be the goal of the channel.
(I could not find the rhenium heptoxide / hafnium thermite that he mentioned in one of his videos. I guess that turned out to be a bit expensive.)

Yea, I discovered this channel few days ago, really nice stuff there! Could not believe It has existed for a year. If youtube recommended video algorithm was working for my interests, I would have found it long ago.

Really recommend it.

draculic acid69 - 14-2-2020 at 00:57

A few channels I don't think have been mentioned yet:

The poor man's chemist
The gayest person on YouTube (this channel would probably be more popular with a name change)

Same thougths as both poster above.
He isnt as good as others when it comes to explaining what's going on in front of your eyes though.

Still, does anyone know if he's around ? He certainly is a Mad Scientist!

j_sum1 - 4-3-2020 at 19:41

You know, it might be worth an invitation to him to join SM.
When I get a clear bubble in the midst of my present chaos, I will contact him via YT and see what happens.

draculic acid69 - 4-3-2020 at 22:27

I've extended a few invitations to ppl on twitter who post a lot of cool stuff some are on science madness and some have never even heard of it.one guy said he wasn't interested in joining after I told him about it I guess when u already have a popular YouTube and Twitter it's not so appealing.but yes definitely extend the invitation and see what happens.maybe he's really mario840 for all we know.

j_sum1 - 5-3-2020 at 02:49

Invitation sent.
Maybe he is mario840? Location and personality seem to match. I never thought of that.

Anyway, I know Chemical Force is well liked around here: especially amongst those who have dabbled in the curious art of YT videos and tried to make the whole thing work. CF really has done some remarkable things in terms of good close-in and slowmo shots of reactions. That is quite an accomplishment. I do hope he makes his presence known here.

Tsjerk - 5-3-2020 at 04:14

He is good! A bit more explanation would be nice, but he is definitely better than NileRed for example, at least more innovative.

After posting here I continued watching his videos.
He certainly has access to an impressive reagent list like Mario does. Decaborane seems almost trivial compared to hydrazine perchlorate (in his Ti vids!).

I'm certain about two things:
- I wouldnt want to be the one cleaning up after his experiments. He is not afraid of making a fiery or toxic mess.
- He must spend an awful lot of time preparing reagents & samples for his videos that are quite short.

I have been watching his channel for a few months now. When I first discovered it I thought "This is neat, but explosions get old fast" I was totally wrong, he doesn't just blow things up so-to-say, its like quoted, he shows us reactions many have only heard about, between chemicals most can't get.

I like Nilered because he goes into detail about the reactions, but I agree Nilered is less innovative, though he has had a couple interesting videos as of lately, Carbonated water from diamonds, ethanol from toilet paper, uranium glass.

I doubt he prepares a lot of the reagents especially the rare ones (bbr3,socl2,ticl4)
As they all seem to come in there own very old looking bottles from different sources.
Some of his stuff looks like it could be old stock.

Herr Haber - 6-3-2020 at 04:21

Preparing as in setting up his experiments not synthesizing. But you are right.
In many experiments he uses liquid chlorine, bromine, oxygen. I highly doubt he records all his experiments with say liquid oxygen then edits the recording into several videos. I rather think he prepares those as needed.

If I were to make videos (as I have been planning for a long time) I would probably make many experiments in one video as he does and not go in depth as NileRed and others do.
I dont have that kind of patience or skills :)

mayko - 6-3-2020 at 08:09

I always got the impression that Chemical Force has access to professional facilities and that the videos are a side gig... even more impressive if it's a ground-up operation!

It was Chemplayer reupload
Lots of great material, sadly all gone......

draculic acid69 - 18-3-2020 at 21:19

It's all still on bitchute

chemplayer... - 20-3-2020 at 18:41

That was 'Chemplayer Reupload' which was someone else reuploading our videos. YouTube appears to have taken them down as well though.

Note that we are quite happy with people re-posting the videos and had no problem with them - knowledge needs to be open-source.

Bitchute still going however...

draculic acid69 - 24-3-2020 at 20:30

Backyard science 2000 just put out an excellent lithium video.dont think they've been mentioned here yet so check out there channel.its also got some potassium and phosphorus videos.

I was just watching Poor Mans Chemists new video and somebody commented on how he needed more followers I agree. So I came here to see if he had been mentioned. He likes to do stuff not done elsewhere.

Perry Gershin good videos about wood stuff
SomeAustrianGuy, has good videos
Ilusys Systems, has a good castner cell video
And most interesting is a video that anyone who makes anhydrous ammonia would want to see.using bariumOH and nh4cl an ENDOTHERMIC rxn occurs instead of an exothermic one.it gets down to -24'c in the mixing vessel.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w_PUydkKKoQ
the nh3 is halfway to being condensed by the time it's evolved.amazing.

Elias experiments. another good channel with interesting stuff.

For anyone interested in energetics Extractions&Ire recently hosted a great discussion on development and design of nitrogen based explosives. It has already been mentioned on this thread, but he has a lot of great content.
Enjoy!

Although not all chemistry related, the acapellascience channel is really worth checking out! :-) Some of these songs, (evo-devo, whole new world, nanobot) are nothing short of absolute brilliance IMO.

A Capella Science. At least two YT channels and appearances on some others as well
https://www.youtube.com/user/acapellascience/videos
https://www.youtube.com/user/acapellascience2/videos

My favourites viewed so far:
Entropic Time. Supremely clever stuff.
Whole new worlds. A history of the discovery of exoplanets set to the soundtrack of Aladdin. Music is just awesome and there is some great humour.
Bohemian Gravity. String theory to the music of Queen. Admittedly some of the content of that one went over my head. But hey, it is string theory.

Anyway, enjoy!

Just found this channel: ALTERED CHEMISTRY:

Oxy - 27-6-2021 at 07:30

Some videos looks like Chemplayer's productions, even the glassware and hotplate looks familiar

draculic acid69 - 27-6-2021 at 20:59

I think the similarities in production are from there open source video project thing. It shows how to make videos like theres. A few other channels also appear similar to chemplayer as well. Astral chemistry for example. They are also a great channel

[Edited on 28-6-2021 by draculic acid69]

Oxy - 27-6-2021 at 21:53

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmCoAb1dW0g

Take a look on that. The glassware is the same as chemplayer's. The camera work, even reflux condenser hoses, filtration funnel and filtration flask.
Of course, there is a chance that one can buy exactly the same gear but it's really unlikely that there will be 100% match.

edit: please compare it to chemplayer's chelidonic acid synth:
https://www.bitchute.com/video/XjmMGAZC2QcF/

The guy is a thief and this video is stolen.

There are some other vids which looks like chemplayer's.

I watched vids of AstralChemistry and despite using same "framework" for production it is totally clear that those are their original productions.

For this one it's unfortunately a theft.

If you have watched more than a couple of NileRed videos… you may love NileGreen and NilePink.
These are parodies, but beautifully done. To dip your feet in the water, try this gem.

I am just going to watch "Turning plastic grapes into glove soda".

I am just a lttle bit stuoid. I meant to post thi here and posted it in another thread but caught it, I'll still leav it there too
"
I mentioned it in another thread but thought I should here too and elaborate a bit. PoorMan didn't actually leave YouTube because of politics. But there was an independent political argument that happened around that time.

He has always still uploaded to BitChute and Odysee, just slower due to life getting busy. The reason he left YouTube was the typical YouTube bullshit. As well His Organic Chemistry Lessons which were really well done used drug molecules as as the teaching tools. If you look through the Odysee and BitChute video lists you will see various videos lessons. He followed a text book to and shared the z-library link for all viewers to download.
