Spammers

polymer - 29-12-2006 at 20:08

To be honest, I find the posts in detritus quite amusing. I have also come to realize that spam has become quite a problem, as many of you have said. To control this problem, I suggest:

1. Image authentication on sign-up and posting forms.
2. Use of cookies to detect users with multipule accounts.
3. Scripts to alert a moderator to spam and trolling.

These things are easy to implement, for all Polverone has to do is enable the image authentication, and cookies are easy to write.

this forum is MUCH more easy to entry compared with E&W or another forum, this cause which discussion can carried in several levels, but has naturally the disadvantage which the spammers will be able to prejudice this forum with quite irritating topics... now one stupid make more one spam.. "vitamin b 12"!

i think which some additional things which they(moderation) will can make it is control the firsts posts...as in E&W...

[sorry about my poor english]

one thing i now imagine:
can the spammers (like some crackers, etc) be connected with any type of government services? because this forum has a lot of things which will can be prejuditial to they as explosives, poisons, etc.. so spammers can will help to forum destruction , sendig lots of really VIRUS links, irritating members (and specially moderators),etc...
what about?

[again, sorry about my poor english or any retarded ideas...]

Detritus is not the place for these posts from spammers. If the hyper links are left intact then they have accomplished their goal. What should be done is simple deletion of the user account and deletion of the post outright. Maybe make a few sub-mods who have this power and are trusted to delete these posts on their usual rounds of the forum. I'm sure many people here check it on an hour by hour basis and just a few of those people deleting spammer posts will make sure many people will never see them again. That is providing there is not some scripting solution that is easy to do, that doesn't stop the spammers that are actual people though.

Aqua_Fortis_100% - 29-12-2006 at 21:21

yes i agree about which these improvised steps "doesn't stop the spammers " but ,i think, at least reduce the volume of spams (only today i see about 2 or 3 spamms)..if continue ,the tendency is increasing the shit spam..

The moderators don't seem to be around much (compared to the spam), electing a few extras for controlling the spam would be a good idea.

Similar measures have been taken at other boards in the last few months. Seems the spammers are either developing more advanced bots, capable of completing most any registration form, or real people are manually doing it.

Since I'm usually up all night, I'd volunteer for night watch.

polymer - 30-12-2006 at 07:41

Viewing the posts, I have decided that:

1. We can elect more moderators.
2. Everyone with the title of administrator or moderator should have a shift monitoring the forum so that guys such as the vitamin dealer will have no chance at posting.
3. The first post that is spam will call for an IP ban.
4. Anyone who has been a member for at least a month and has made one decent post can be given the title of moderator.

chemoleo - 30-12-2006 at 08:57

Lol Polymer I think point 4 pretty much amounts to an end-of-the-year joke :D

I dont see so much the problem, to be honest, in the past few days I deleted perhaps 4 or 5 spam posts, if that. Not such a big issue really, particularly if this was just a little spike in spam activity.

Much worse is the madscientist guy who posted the PWs, and that took a fair bit of deleting. We may have to change the PWs if these forums now attract a lot of undesired posters.

evil_lurker - 30-12-2006 at 09:10

I did like the section on doing the number thing before registering...

Course it would also help to have confirmed email adresses as well... (been so long can't remember if I had mine verified or not).

The last option would be to have every new member approved by admin.

Fleaker - 30-12-2006 at 10:59

I do not think we need more moderators...from what I've seen, simply reporting offensive/spammatory posts to the mods gets the job done. Either report, or use the U2U feature (which is fastes IMHO).

Being a moderator is quite the commitment and is not a job just anyone could do as it requires dedication, objectivity, and a profound sense of what the board is about. Oh, and let's not forget, some humanity :P and moderation

I was blissfully unaware that the chap who posted the PWs was not authorized to do so.

That being said the logic of having PWs and then posting them was lost on me.

In my case I had requested the References PW a few days before from a moderator by U2U and never got a reply so when the PWs were posted I used the Reference one. I have never used the other one (for Whimsy). In References I have not yet read everything comprehensively but I have not noticed a spam problem there.

Organikum - 1-1-2007 at 05:41

Whats your actual problem? I drop in here every other day and I rarely see any spam and if it gets deleted quickly.

The last thing we need is some selfdeclared board-police or SCM vigilantes. Get a life boys.

This here is a great well moderated board and it was and is liberal. And thats the best thing to say in times where people seem to love to cry for more control everywhere, the same time bitching that they cannot buy chemicals anymore.

Anybody considered the possibility that the ghost of Quince may have returned to haunt the forum?

12AX7 - 1-1-2007 at 07:53

Nope.

chemoleo - 1-1-2007 at 12:00

Come on , a post simply containing 'nope' is just as much SPAM. Or is post-whoring a better expression? Please refrain from pointless posts such as this.

Organikum - 1-1-2007 at 22:52

Word! :D

12AX7 - 1-1-2007 at 23:41

Murr? It was a response. Did you notice the previous post?

Now you've "cost" the forum THREE posts, plus any more that reply to this situation! :D

Organikum - 1-1-2007 at 23:56

A nice board software modification I could think of would be one which assignes 12AX7 et al a random post count between -100 and +100.

On the other hand: Who with a brain gives a bloody fuck about postcount?
