drano & gasoline explosion

chemrox - 2-3-2007 at 10:33

My employee claims he witnessed the following:

He and friend in desert. Friend places gas can with gasoline on rock. Fills ping-pong ball with drano and tapes over hole. Places drano/ball in gasoline. Some little time later an explosion ensues.

I cannot think of a reason for such a reaction. Anybody know anything about this?

a old ex-navy guy with plenty of stories.. has told me four variations of this...

the H2SO4 creates heat and heat and gas go boom....

Drano is a mixture of Sodium salts; hypochlorite, silicate, and hydroxide.

edit: I am doubtful that such a diluted source of hypochlorite can do shit other than clean toilets and sinks.

There, Hypochlorite! There has been extensive discussion on hypochlorite/hydrocarbon mixtures as explosives on roguesci. This, if indeed something did occur, is likely at the root.

Drano contains aluminum chips as well which react with the
NaOH in water and cause it to get hot and boil. In a
hydrocarbon I dont think that this would happen. It seems
that the pingpong ball would just melt and the drano would
fall to the bottom of the can and sit there.

i would immagine this would work..some one try it and video tape it :)

There are so many variations of this it's hard to guess what the mode of action
is without knowing the exact ingredients used. I stress K N O W I N G and not
assuming or surmising what is used. Gasoline may contain antiknock additives
such Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether MBTE. This formulation is being phased out
and is already banned by many states. _ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTBE
Concoctions range from the stupid , see _

To the practical such as that of the Molotov cocktail which requires the
reactants to be separated by the glass bottle because the effect is
instantaneous. A variation on this has been posted here _

That reminds me, I heard of some scare over a parcel that contained gasoline and Comet® cleanser. The authorities said it was a potentially explosive mixture but it never did so much as fizzle when I tested it myself. Is there supposed to be a critical amount for it to work? The experiment I did was extremely small but I figured if the parcel was at all dangerous I should be able to get some kind of reaction from it even in the small quantity I tried.
I believe comet is mostly calcium hypochlorite but it doesn't list its ingredients on the container. Has anyone seen this mix do anything or are the authorities full of bologna?
