Labware and Vacuum Filtration

MineMan - 7-3-2018 at 21:39

Hello All,

I remember sites like banggood had some really good prices a few months ago... it seems like the availability of chems and labware have sharply gone up in price and down in availability in the last two months.

Banggood is not much cheaper than ebay, gearbest has nothing and I though they use to. Google sucks these days and only shows sponsored sites.

What are some good places? I am here in the US. I would like to get a small vacuum filtration kit with a pump

If you don’t mind a hand operated pump then this might be an option, if you’ll be doing filtering regularly then it’ll be well worth the money:

Büchner funnels from China are cheap and the one I have is excellent quality, set me back approximately $10 and has a 60mL capacity, perfect for the scales I work with. You’ll need an adapter too if your glassware isn’t 23mm, and these are also cheap, I got one from China and it hasn’t failed me. Alternately, I use a filter paper folded into a glass funnel, placed into a thermometer socket with a vacuum adapter and that works quite well.

To be fair, it may be a better option to source equipment separately as opposed to buying kits, especially if you’ve already got flasks. Like I said, Chinese glass works fine as long as you’re not subjecting it to tough conditions, I usually filter at room temperature and occasionally up to around 80C. Definitely source a pump locally though, being more complex and likely to break, but I do recommend spending out for the sake of reliability and longevitiy.

Edit: just adding some of my finds, copy over the item numbers to the US store.

I can supply Buchner funnels, glass frits, filter flasks, and related stuff in the US for reasonable prices. No pumps (but I might have a water aspirator left, however). Just u2u me with what size you want or look at the spreadsheet of glassware in the thread on glassware looking for a home.

If Dr. Bob doesn't have it, Nanshin glass in China has had good stuff in my recent experience, and they package glass very well for the trip. Takes about 2 to 3 weeks to arrive.

If you have a sink, an aspirator is a great hands-free vacuum source.
