Thrift stores

ampHoteric - 12-4-2018 at 13:39

So this last week at Goodwill I found a 400ml beaker, a 600ml beaker, a 250ml erlenmeyer, a 400ml wide mouth erlenmeyer for a grand total of $2.67 and a 52nd edition CRC for $2.99.

What are your thrift store finds?

happyfooddance - 12-4-2018 at 14:20

That is amazing. I wish I had a similar thrift store find to share.

I do know, however, of a Halloween store that buys cheap boro beakers and erlenmeyers, and they are super cheap right after halloween when everything goes on clearance. All about $1 a piece. They are not quite as good as pyrex but they are close.

I've gotten a lot of nice old chemistry books at Half Price Books. Normally they're a bit hard to find, but one of the ones in Austin had an unusually large number of them. I assume they mostly came from the same place.

Unfortunately I haven't had any interesting glassware or equipment finds locally.

Wow. Talk about some people’s luck. The only thing I ever find at goodwill/salvation army are chem text for $1.00, sometimes 50 cents. I do find acasional interesting glass for cheap, but never any lab glass. And I thought I was the only one that went to thrift stores for chemistry related material....

I had my first thrift store find a few days ago when a friend of mine picked this up for me for $6

They said they have a lot more so I'm going tomorrow. It is only about 35 miles from me. If I get anything good I will post it here.

I have a ton of uranium glass from thrift stores. I would sell it if anyone wants some. I have a few small plates and a large dish.

I went to the antique store today and they had quite a bit of glassware but the prices were ridiculous. $30 for a 2 neck 500 ml flat bottom boiling flask! I bought a graduated cylinder, 2 funnels, and a pair of tongs. I will stick with getting my glassware from Dr. Bob.

Today’s find was a test tube rack with 4 large test tubes. This was for 4$ at a charity store. This store has been good for me in the past with several great finds of late. This includes volumetric flasks, glass tube, burettes funnels and a large chromatography column.

I wanted a nice piece of Depression era uranium glass for my element collection. I picked up a couple of saucers at the local markets. I did not have my UV torch with me so I could not test it. They turned out to be not what I wanted.

Similar thing happened at a garage sale recently. I picked up a lovely art deco style jug and tumbler set for a couple of bucks and it also failed to fluoresce. It was pretty to look at but we don't need more clutter in the house.

I took both purchases to the local antique shop and they gave me some cash for them. Well below normal selling price but they have to make their cut some how. I then found a nice U glass dish that glows a vibrant green under UV light. Bought that and walked out of the shop. Once I tallied up purchases and sales, the whole exercise cost me three bucks.

Today's find, $1 hard case 3 ring binder clearly marked "material safety data sheets"... This can do nicely :)

That looks like a great find

Which part of the country are you in where you find nice glassware at thrift stores?
I never had such amazing luck!
Is it just a general feature of big cities/university towns or maybe tech hubs?
I have seen some nice boro glasware at antique shops but they were more expensive than new!

I picked up a copy of Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach (Stuart Warren) for $1 on my weekly VHS run friday :)
