methylamine screwup

I was replentishing my MeNH2.HCl supply and after collecting the first crop of NH4Cl crystals I mixed most of the mother liquor with the distillate. To recover, I started distilling the mixture with a short Snyder column. The distiilate started coming off at 35 deg and slowly is rising toward 40 deg.

What is this liquid? Methylal should be present but its bp is 41 deg. (760mm)

Maybe methyl formate (bp 31-33°C) if you used formaldehyde with MeOH.

No MeOH per se .. wonder if there was enough in the formaldehyde solution (as a stabilizer) .. Me is available though since Me-am is being made .. I wonder .. this tallies with the distillation.

1) methyl formate 31-33
2) methylal 40-42

It sure looks possible

I think I recall the fact that most formaldehyde solutions contain MeOH.. Was there alot of it? I could also be methylal forming an azeotrope with something..
