Glas-col sizes?

monolithic - 3-10-2018 at 15:08

I need to heat 250, 500, and 1000ml RBFs. Ideally I would have a heating mantle for each of these but I want to keep costs down. Would a 1000ml Glas-Col (O Series; 100A O408) work for all of them?

Yes! You can put stuff around your flask to get better heat transfer and insulate as well (Al foil, Al shot, copper bb's, etc.).

If you have a hot plate these are even better:

Those do look very nice, but I can't afford $600+. :o

Other companies re-brand this system like ChemGlass and they come up on Ebay from time to time at a substantial discount - like at around $100. They're often sold by liquidators that don't seem to know what it is or how to describe it.

Some of the 500 ml mantles are flat and flexible enough to be able to wrap around a 250 but also flatten some to hold a 1000 ml rbf. Not saying that it is perfect, but that is an alternative to using a 1000 ml mantle plus filler (sand, shot, ball bearings, etc). A lot depends on which size you can find a good deal on.
