Production of Iron powder with very high surface area using electrowinning of iron metal anode.


This cell uses acidic bisulfate solution or H2SO4 or HCl as the electrolyte.
The anode is iron which both iron 2 and iron 3 are generated at the anode.
There must exist free iron not connected as an electrode to react with iron 3 reducing it back to iron 2 as it dissolves slowly.
The cathode will have iron crystals plate out as the cell runs and the operating voltage is 12 volts for a nice fine iron powder product perfect for reduction of nitro groups into amine groups and other stuff.

yea you can get a lot of iron powder from this process though its very fine and highly reactive and likely to immidiately form oxides.
Atleast when plated at 12 volts so hence maybe lower voltage will lead to coarser crystals which are more desirable for your needs.

During my experiments, a higher current density at the cathode resulted in a greater surface area of the plated material. My notes show I had found a sweet spot between making iron powder, or a solid mass of material with a high surface area.
I was able to successfully melt a 50ml rbf and carch fire to my workbench before i quit.

yea this product was meant to be used in a reduction of nitro groups by someone who asked me the best way to prepare iron which is basically approaching pyrophoric levels in solution without having to heat iron citrates in a flask and risk setting his reagents on fire as he pours the iron into his reaction vessel or pours a solvent in to coat it.
